Hi everyone, I'm back.

Hi everyone, mb20lover here. I wasn't sure where to post this.

It's been a while since I was on the forums, so I just wanted to make a post saying that I'm back. However, I'll try my best to limit my time, comments, etc on here.

I won't bother tagging anyone, and I'll try to keep this as my only open thread that I have created.

I've missed everyone I've spoken to on here, and I hope to talk to some new people. I have been using my offline supports - my Psychiatrist, GP, Parent support of course, and a Social Worker. I'm in the process of finding a Psychologist but I'm having no luck.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello, and also I hope I haven't upset anyone on the forums or anything like that because nothing was intentional, so I deeply apologise.

An update on me, I recently turned 21, can't do much with COVID though, it's a hard year for everyone unfortunately.

I also have a milestone, an achievement, I've been seeing my Psychiatrist for a year which is the longest I've stayed with a therapist. And I also finally have a GP I feel comfortable with. I'm on different meds that seem to be working a little but I still of course have my moments, but these meds I've been on the longest for out of any of the ones I've tried.

Other than that, please don't feel pressured to comment anyone, although it would be nice to connect with some people, old or new, but like I said that's okay. I just wanted to check in.

If you've read this and made it this far, thank you. Stay safe and take care everyone, as much as possible with the unfortunate COVID circumstances.

Thinking of all the Beyond Blue Mods & Users. I've missed everyone.

Dear Jstar48, Tayla and all

I'd like to clear up some assupmtions, concerning who does what .

A simple guide can be found here, put out by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

https://www.yourhealthinmind.org/psychiatry-explained/mental-health-professionals

The top of the heap is a psychiatrist who has become a regular GP, done a year's practice then a further 5 years in psychiatry. As such can prescribe medications, give authoritative diagnoses and also as much therapy as he or she decides. Also the length of time between consultations can vary widely. Normally a psychiatrist is a referral from a GP . By and large they are very expensive with very many charging a lot more than the specified Medicare rate.

As a worker's compensation case I have been treated on a fortnightly basis by a psychiatrist for a lengthy period. This person prescribes medication and gives therapy each time. The original referral came from my physician (GP), and the psychiatrist has on occasion referred me to a clinical psychologist for specialized therapy

A Clinical Psychologist, also a therapist referred to by a GP, has at least half the length of training but is not a GP, so can recommend medication but cannot prescribe it, this is done be the GP. A psychologist can diagnose a mental illness and provide therapy. They too are expensive

In both cases it is hard to find one that bulk bills

The physician or GP can refer you to the above when a matter falls beyong normal expertise, often under a Medicare Health Plan if it is to a psychologist or other MH professional. Sadly up until recently Psychiatrists were not included in this plan, and that inclusion may be temporary

Since COVID there have been changes to who is eligible for what medicare rebate and a broadening of telehealth. I do not know all the details of this although I use it. In the best of situations the GP provides an ongoing over-site of one's treatment. There are proportionally more GP's who bulk bill.

You may be able to sort out all these facts, however I'd not attempt it and ask for expert advice, this government site gives the legislation

http://www.mbsonline.gov.au/internet/mbsonline/publishing.nsf/Content/Factsheet-TempBB

I don't know if I've clarified matters, however at least I've tried. The most important thing as far as I'm concerned is that all your medical professionals become a stable team who not only gives you confidence in them but are working together

I'm really confused after reading that Croix. Yes of course I appreciate your reply, but I know the jobs and what they do for GPs, Psychologists and Psychiatrists. What I wrote above is my GP prescribes me medications, but my Psychiatrist does at times too because in the past I've had a few GPs and for some unknown reason, even with notes from my Psychiatrist, they refused to prescribe them to me, so he had to send them in the mail because he's in another state (the mail was ok before COVID of course), or he had to fax them. I see him on Telehealth & my GP in person.

My Psychiatrist tries to give me as much therapy as he can. I don't really feel comfortable talking about this actually. I found my Psychiatrist himself & it's all on Medicare, I don't need to pay anything. For my GP I pay $25 each visit & Medicare pays the rest, even if it's a long consult with the GP, it's still $25. It's more but I have the DSP so it's $25 for me, & others on that.

They keep telling me to get a Psychologist but I keep explaining to them that it's extremely difficult. I have had traumatic experiences with Psychologists & at Headspace where I also saw a Psychologist & joined a group. I've been told to take my meds, k**l myself, I'm faking it, etc by so called "Psychologists". I saw a Mental Health Nurse (a male), the same thing. I never say anything wrong for this to happen to me. So of course I explain that stuff to my GP & Psychiatrist. Not only that but even before COVID, places won't bulk bill & it's too expensive for me, even with a referral, & they don't take new patients no matter how many places I email whether it's local or on Telehealth. Like I said even before COVID it was like this.

So I'm not sure why you sent me that lengthy comment & the link, because I know about what they all do, so you've really confused me. I'm not trying to sound rude, I apologise if I do.

Hey Tayla,

I’m guessing some of that info from Croix was for me, cos I’m a bit of a nuffy ( no idea) about heaps of stuff. Tend to avoid Drs etc whenever I can. But if they help then it’s all good.

but maybe it helps others reading too. Anyhow, thx for the clarification Croix. I didn’t realise about the two types of psych’s .

cheers

i misread i think----

i agree generally with what J has written re medication and talking to the GP about the lower does maybe... and thought maybe also that tracking how you're going with it might help

writing downa list of your fears/concerns etc to share with the Mh professionals.

Hi Tayla. Are you still planning on sending that email to your psychiatrist on the 11th?I hope you get a quick response back.A couple of years ago my daughter had a reaction to one of the medications she was on prescribed by her psychiatrist and I took her to the GP and the doctor rung the Pychiatrist and aked her for advice and got the medication changed. It was so good having a doctor like that really makes things easier.

Tark care,

Mark.

I'm really confused & upset after that

Hi Tayla what are you confused and upset about? I hope it wasn't my post.

Hi Mark. No it wasn't your comment.

I'm just upset because I do talk to my Psychiatrist & GP about meds, & the stuff everyone wrote above. I try to keep that stuff to myself. I've been told I'll be on high dosage meds anyway, & whenever I start a new med, as I'm sure anybody would, I start on a low dosage then if I'm tolerating it, I go higher. I've stopped previous meds because of side affects such as dizziness even into the next day, & my Psychiatrist & I have decided to stop it. It's his decision also. We do discuss this. I'm on a low dosage at the moment but it's also the highest dosage known for this possible med I'm currently taking. It can also be the medication in general. It's different for everybody.

I appreciate and know that everyone's trying to help. It's difficult when I can't ask a professional because I can't get a Psychologist & I have no way of contacting my GP & Psychiatrist, only the Telehealth company with my Psychiatrist. I could call the GP Clinic but they probably wouldn't pass on a message.

So I was just confused as to why people were saying about the difference between a Psychiatrist & a Psychologist, & a GP, I know what they all do.

What I meant my Psychiatrist giving me therapy is that he tries to help me as much as he can, because I was struggling to find a GP at the time, and I'm still struggling to see Psychologists. I'd rather not go into the stuff we discuss, and the therapy.

I'll email the company on the 11th & take it from there.

Hi Tayla

i had a few suggestions and was just wandering if you were interested in looking into seeing a clinical social worker as a psychotherapist as you mentioned you had past trauma with psychologists

i also have heard about tracking meds eg daily notes on how ur reacting to the meds. those were things that came to mind when i read the posts here but no worries if they're not relevant to ur situation or if I've got it wrong. Keep well.

Hey Tayla if the conversation isn't helping you that's totally fine perhaps we could change the subject to something you feel more comfortable with or you could let ppl know what is more helpful for u...
