Reality check - Anxiety, Depression, PTSD

Mathy

Hi All, I live with PTSD, Anxiety and Depression. My PTSD is pretty good, but the other 2 monsters not so. Last year I had arrived at a point where I was medication free, happy and functioning well. Then moving house and an incident at work left me back in the hole again. The work incident was a combination of a complete restructure of my hours and change of leadership - too much change, not handled well. I got suspended, and the process wasn’t handled well, so I bailed out of work for 3 weeks. In 6 years I’ve had 11 managers and #12 arrived 6 months ago, along with a change of 2/3 under managers. New manager is ok (but clueless) and the 2 new “under managers” are inclined to be variously, aggressive, rude and sarcastic. I guess that’s the reality of the “fast paced” world of retai - ha!

Slowly, over the last 6 months I’ve struggled to go to work, get out of bed, lost motivation, and lost the enjoyment of playing my sport - which ironically is important for maintaining my mental health. Sport is golf - so, exercise, challenge, discipline and friendships. I’m single, so this is important to me.

2 weeks ago I ran myself through a checklist and realised that I was NOT travelling at all well, so I upped my ADs and made an appt with my Psych - which is in 3 weeks time. Last Friday I had an enormous panic attack, following a Thursday night at work with the least favourite of the under managers. I guess my mind has decided it’s had enough, I ended up in ER (I’m 61, so can’t assume not a heart attack). So, I now have an appt with GP tomorrow and a sick certificate until next Monday - and I feel like rubbish.

So, if someone says to you that your work rate is “not good enough, *insert my name*”, in front of others, it could be interpreted as a joke or not. I’ve worked for this business for over 9 years, I work my butt off, and I found this insulting, joke or not. What do others feel? If once a week/fortnight one consistently had this sort of, or sarcastic interactions what would you think/feel? I guess I’m trying to decide if I’m being overly sensitive and possibly unfair.

Thoughts would be much appreciated, cheers M 🙂

Hi Mathy,

That is great that you got your preferred hours back which will bring more stability to your life which is something us mental health sufferers love and somewhat require. Great news that your dog will also benefit from it as well, they are most definitely creatures of habit and at that age would like it to go back to normal so again another win for you. Not sure how some managers stay managers when they do not have leadership skills but sounds like you will keep voicing your issues which I do not think is a bad thing.

My best,

Jay

Hi DB and Jay,

So, I’m off to see the pyschologist today. I’m kind of dialogiung my thoughts.

What to you do when you’ve invested nearly 10 years in an organisation that you were sympatico with when you started and now, that’s no longer the case.

I’m not the only one who feels the way I do. However, bullying young workers is not on, for me. I was raised to have have strong moral/ethical values, which are now being compromised.

Think dissonance is the word I’m looking for here, as well as how to fix that 😊

Thanx for your thoughts, cheers M 🙂

Hi Mathy,

I think organisations change so much over the year as a way to reinvent themselves which can mean new management styles and what once was accepted is no longer and in your case that is quite disappointing. Have you had any luck involving the union at all? Bullying workers is just not on and I am glad you are taking a moral and ethic stand against it. It shows your true character which is great.

My best,

Jay

Hi Jay,

Crap happens in this organisation when we employ leadership that hasn’t been grown in the organisation. That’s the change that has be happening. Leadership that comes via the “ranks” so to speak, understand our culture. Bodies employed from outside, straight into leadership are a rampant disaster. It’s not rocket science, but somehow, we manage to select some out and out duds, on a regular basis.

Sorry, last 2 days have been very stressful. Thanks, cheers M 🙂

Hey DB,

Still thinking about my Psych visit.

Union make more money from negotiating EBAs, than from members - so they have a conflict of interest as far as I’m concerned.

cheers M 🙂

Maths that you're gunna soeak up's right thing to do but darl as mentioned from experience it can be you only that gets burnt so suggesting take your time & look at options, so maybe union not so good but id still be pushing them to do their stuffin job, you're gunna need backing & as also mentioned you cant always count on people involved.

What about something with signatures written officially but always chance of being leaked to mongrels

You're good Maths xx

Hi Mathy,

I understand everything you are saying, when organisation employee outsiders to do the leadership roles it never normally ends up. You are right on the mark with that. All we can do as employee's is hope management makes the best decisions. Obviously in this case, they haven't and you are hoping to fix that, which is great.

You haven't been rude at all, this is your thread, not mine. My thread is quite old, I haven't posted in it for quite some time, I am on these forums to help anyone and everyone I can. I am ok but. Every day is a new day and a chance to grow.

My best,

Jay
