Confused about severe mood swings

So I am generally a very happy and cheerful person, however for the last few months I've been getting into these very down moods. It started off as just feeling quite low when I was home and being extremely irritable and snappy, then feeling alright the next day. Then it got to feeling very sad and lacking interest in most things I'd usually enjoy and crying quite a bit, and then suddenly one day I'd be fine (the sad period lasted a few days). Recently, I was feeling extremely sad to the point where I would sleep half the day and not want to get out of bed, I felt so low that my parents and a few friends noticed and would ask me what was wrong. I felt bored of life, had no interest in anything, I cried myself to sleep 3 nights in a row and I really did think I was depressed because I was absolutely miserable and nothing could cheer me up. This lasted about 5 days continuously and then I woke up one day and I felt back to normal. There's been about 1.5 month gap between the 2 noticeable sad periods. But now I'm just so confused because sure there's one thing being a moody teenager but I don't understand how my mood can get so severe to the point where I was about to go see my GP cause I was so sad.
Also to note, I'm a 19 year old girl, have had past experience with mild mental health issues about 5/6 years ago however did not feel as bad as I have recently.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sarallita

Welcome and good on you for posting this morning!

You are an amazing person to have summoned the courage to post Sarallita 🙂

19 is a tough age. I remember feeling the same. I saw my GP at the time as these feelings were effecting me too

Just some good news for you....Most GP's have better training with temporary depression/mood swings than they used to.

The moods swings no matter how severe are very common. I hope you can see your GP as you will have everything to gain and nothing to lose by doing so 🙂

Mood swings can be awful and have a effect on our quality of life.

At least by seeing your GP you can have some clarity on whats happening. Sometimes we have way too much on our plate to deal with....family...friends...peer group drama....social media etc which can result in making you feel the way you do

you are not alone here in any way. Beyond Blue have also just appointed new young champions that can help you too!

The forums are a judgement free zone. I hope you can post back with any questions that you have or even just for a chat. You will never be judged here....just embraced

my kind thoughts for you

Paul

hello Sarallita, welcome to the site and thanks so much for posting your comment.
As Paul has said we now have a few new young members who have joined our list of repliers, but can I say is that we never know when we will be hit once again with depression, it could happen when you are having a great day, but for no particular reason it grabs you, and it will be so delighted that it can bring you back to depression.
There's an old saying before you go and visit your doctor and it says 'an apple a day will keep the doctor away', how true, because if you go to visit them for a fever, doesn't the fever go away, and the same applies if you have depression, because you will feel fine when you start talking with them, it's a false illusion, remember yesterday when you couldn't get out of bed.
Write down how you have been feeling over the last few days and then hand it to your doctor.
When you wake up and feel great after a bout of depression, this doesn't necessarily mean it's gone, you hope it does, but all you're done is push this illness to one side, because 9/10 it's bound to return.
Depression is a reoccurring illness, it comes and then it goes, but each time you get better then you have learnt something knew, not that you maybe aware of what you have learnt, but you have.
Never not go to your doctor if you suffer from depression, it has to be kept under check, today, tomorrow and in the future. Geoff.
