Hi, welcome
Anger is a trait that really needs anger management plans and therapy. The trait is far to inground for me to be able to change his ways. Maturity in men takes a long time often in their 30's or even 40's.
You could softly advise him upon going out that you dont want to be embarrassed by anger issues. Then most important praise him after the event as to how mush you enjoyed it more than usual.

Hey Kylie1978,
Thank you for sharing this with us, we're happy to have you here.
Correct me if I'm wrong, it sounds like you're preparing to have a conversation with your partner about how his negativity is affecting you? Have you mentioned it before at all and if so, how did that conversation go?
If not, here are my thoughts.
Usually, anger that feels misplaced or unnecessary comes from another emotion that he's feeling towards either himself or something in his life. If you're preparing for a conversation with him about it, you may want to let him know what you've observed, how it's affecting you, and give him the space to talk through it with you so you can both start to understand what could be going on. Approach it with empathy and openness, and it should lead to a better outcome.
As TonyWK has mentioned, therapy may also be a helpful suggestion for him to work through and overcome his anger.
I hope this helps, please continue chatting with us if you'd like to. We're here to help.
