Emotional Breakdowns

Hey guys, it’s Liam…so last Monday, I don’t know what happened but I was just feeling severely down…this caused me to suffer from a severe emotional breakdown, something which I’m all too familiar with considering the breakdowns I’ve had in the past…If you’re wondering how these breakdowns occur, they occur when I get overwhelmed emotionally, and then I just…start crying…my question is…what exactly can I call these things I have instead of emotional breakdowns? Also I have suffered severely because of these breakdowns…especially at school, one of the SSOs, he believed I was faking them to get out of doing work, but I was only having these breakdowns because the workload was too hard for me…that was when I was 17…I’m now 20…I feel like I can’t be emotional or cry… *Crying* 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hey guys. Liam here. I don't know why but, tonight, I just, feel sad...like I feel like crying...I mean this week has been...fine, but I don't even know what's going on...I know I have triggers and stuff like that because of my mentor losing his client and my cousin suffering from mental health issues, but...I felt like things were going well for the most part...but...I don't know what's wrong with me...I know sometimes I just need to let my emotions out by crying, but...I just...I don't know why I'm feeling this way...I have a great best friend who by the way, he's been a good listening ear, and I do have a couple of girls who I'm friends with but...I just wish I had a young girl that was my age who could comfort me with a hug when I'm crying... *Crying*😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hey Liam,

Thanks for your post. I promise, there is nothing wrong with you. It is ok to let your emotions out and is in fact healthy. Sometimes we have wonderful people in our lives and still feel down and sad, and that's ok. It's not your fault. May I ask if you have any strategies you use to help yourself calm down in those tough moments? I can see you are trying your best. Keep reaching out here!

Well I don't really have any if I'm being honest.

For me personally, if I'm feeling down, I try to plan what I am going to do later to make me feel better. For example, I might think I'll go and watch a movie when I get home. It doesn't have to be something big, it can be small. Could even be listening to music, reaching out to someone you trust and having a chat. Anything to boost your mood and make you feel better. Try to get enough sleep too, self-care is very important 😊

Thank you. I usually just talk to my Nan.

Hey guys…Liam here. I don’t know what the fudge is wrong with me but I just…I feel like crying…even though I’ve had an okay week this week, I just feel like letting my emotions out…

Sorry meant to post in Depression but I guess here works too.

Hi Liam

It definitely pays to wonder what our crying is all about at times. Once the revelations start to kick in, we can say 'Oh, that makes complete sense. I fully understand now'. Even a partial understanding is enough at times.

I suppose the ultimate question comes down to 'Exactly what am I crying out?'. Stress, frustration, disappointment, sadness etc or on the flip side is it joy, positive excitement, love, pride etc? For myself, I find it tends to happen with a sense of overwhelm. The emotions become so great that they start to leak out my eyes. That's one way of looking at it.

A couple of other things I try to consider come down to 1)is there a gradual build up of emotion I'm not entirely conscious of that's happening or 2)is the emotion triggered in a matter of seconds bringing on a sense of sudden overwhelm? Another factor can involve whether the emotion relates to one thing in particular or it involves a combination of things. I'd say the most important factor can come down to whether I can make sense of things myself or whether I need others to wonder with me when it comes to what the outpouring (tears) are about.

At the end of the day, the body has an incredible way of naturally venting what needs to be vented. Whether it leads us to cry things out, talk things out, scream things out, sigh things out, pee/poop/vomit/sweat things out etc etc, it typically won't hold onto anything it functions better without. Even when it comes to crying out an overwhelming sense of pride or joy, it manages better without the overwhelm.

If I'm trying to figure things out myself, when it comes to what the outpouring's really all about, I tend to meditate on it. If I imagine there's a part of me that has the right or best answer, I have to first ask the right or best question. The question can be 'What are all these tears really about?'. Sometimes the answer that suddenly comes to mind can be quite surprising, such as with 'You're experiencing so many mixed emotions'. While one emotion may be manageable, a lot of mixed emotions can definitely become overwhelming at times.

Thank you. Even though I don’t fully understand what you’re talking about.
