Everything is just too much at the moment

Hey guys I'm new here so hello, this may contain some triggering stuff so here is a warning.

I'm going through a heap of stresses at the moment and I really just wanted to share.

Firstly I have just came out of a long term serious relationship and I now live all by myself. Secondly my 41 year old aunt has just passed away from cancer. I can't sleep as when I start to fall asleep I think I can't breathe and end up having panic attacks. also I have so many uni assignments due that I think I'm going to rip my hair out.

I used to see a phycologist but she treated me like I was stupid and I don't know if I have the energy or time to see someone else.

Does anyone have any tips for uni study stress or dealing with loss that they think could help me?

Thanks for reading and I hope you're all doing well.

Kind regards

Be brave and try again to see a different psychologist. With the right help things will start to feel a lot better and you will be given the advice you need. I have also had before the wrong help, but I would encourage you to try again, as I am doing.

Hi Purple fish,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear that things have been so overwhelming. I'm also sorry for the loss of your Aunt.

It's crucial you receive help for the panic attacks, general anxiety and for your loss/grief. Like Strong said, it is definitely worth trying a new psychologist. Making an appointment with your doctor (GP) and getting a referral is a good option. Your doctor may be able to recommend a particular psychologist/professional.

I also struggle with uni assignments. My anxiety worsened about a month ago now, but it's starting to calm down a bit again. I've had anxiety (OCD) since the age of 13, so for 10 years now. About two weeks ago I saw a new psychologist for the first time in several years, and I'm very glad I made that appointment! My second appointment is tomorrow.

As you have anxiety and have also experienced a profound loss, it is worth trying to apply for assessment extensions. While this is not a long-term solution and won't "fix" the situation, it will allow you extra time to complete your work, so you hopefully won't feel as panicked.

If you have been diagnosed with anxiety by your doctor, you can make an appointment with a university counsellor to disclose your mental health situation. I did this a few years ago, and receive some extra allowances (e.g. one week extensions with no medical certificate) because of my ongoing anxiety. At the end of the degree, there would be no indication that the person received these allowances. Future employers won't find out, and the "access plan" or whatever your uni may call it, is confidential.

Tip: if you use the Search bar at the top right corner of this website, you can search for posts on this forum related to specific topics/issues. For instance, you might type in "university stress" or "panic attack".

Feel free to reply or ask more questions 🙂

Good luck and best wishes,

Hello PurpleFish and Welcome too!

It would be dreadful for you right now having this anxiety symptoms especially after being through so much.

Strong100 (Welcome!) and SM have both provided solid advice especially about seeing a therapist as soon as you can to help you understand and cope with your anxiety. It is crucial to get a handle on the anxiety as early as you can.

A therapist will provide you with a platform on which you can heal and recover. Regular visits are also a bonus. Your GP is a great place to start and may even have some help to offer too...they have a better understanding of anxiety than what they did even 10 years ago.

I do hope you find some peace soon Purple

My Kind Thoughts

Thanks so much to everyone for their help!

The phycologist I was seeing was through a referal by my gp but I have made an appointment with him to get a referal to another one.

Again, thank you and I hope you are all well.

Kind regards,

Purplefish
