Racing Thoughts

My thoughts run through my head at incredible speeds to the point where I get headaches and I start crying. Last week I felt so good about myself. I felt really excited for no reason at all. I ended climbing a roof whilst my friend was standing on the ground trying to get me down. I have no idea why I did that. I felt this massive rush of energy and just had the need to do something stupid. This week I have just been my usual - depressed and emotional. I don't understand why this is happening?

These mood states you're experiencing may indicate you are experiencing a mental illness. It's important that you make an appointment ASAP with your doctor (GP) to discuss your symptoms.

Here are two 24/7 helpline numbers you can ring when you need to talk about your mental health (in addition to seeing a doctor):

I am glad you have come to the forums for some support and guidance. Having racing thoughts can be scary especially if you did something you felt was dangerous. I agree with Zeal, I think you should talk to your GP about your concerns or call one of the numbers provided. You could also use a service called headspace, it is a youth mental health service and it is low cost. I found them helpful when I had concerns regarding my mental health.

I would also keep a mood diary or calendar. Put an arrow for your energy levels, if they are high put the arrow facing up and if depressed or low put it facing down. This might be helpful for your GP.

Hi THJ - I just want to reinforce what the others have said, in particular about getting to your GP as soon as you can.

I support Steph's idea of a mood diary (I have done this and it's very helpful if you're up and down). It doesn't have to be complicated, just track your moods over a couple of weeks. Start with last week and the time of high energy. Make a few notes of things you've done or felt that have disturbed you, so you remember what to tell the doc - and show the doc the mood diary.

It's important to tell your doc about the excitment and rush of energy as well as the depressed and emotional time. Sometimes we don't think to talk about heightened energy or elation and our docs only get half the story, which of course affects diagnosis.

I hope you'll keep posting here - I'm keen to know how you get on with your doctor, and if these feelings or changes in mood continue.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the advice. The last few days have been very anxious. I was away from home and just had an urge to leave and run back to my family. Sometimes when I do silly things, I don't feel like it's wrong. I feel like that's what I have to do. I actually go to headspace and have been for just over a year now. Last time I went to see my Psychologist, she referred me onto the Psychiatrist who I have not yet seen. I will update when I have been seen. At the moment though, I am feeling really down and I will probably be like that for a while.

Thanks for checking back in. I myself have anxiety flare ups to and know how racing thoughts can be confusing and may cause us to do silly things. You are not alone there is what I'm saying. I also went to headspace and I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. Glad your psychologist has referred you on, will give you some peace of mind anyways
