Need friends

I know this might sound pathetic to some people, but I really just signed up for this website to find friends my age dealing with similar issues. I am fourteen (turning fifteen on the 27th) and I barely have any friends in and out of school, I have one really close friend, but she lives so far away so I only ever see her at school. I have been having a tough time recently, dealing with bulimia (vomiting up to two or three ti) and I've been fighting with my dad, I have trouble telling people close to me because I don't want them to worry. I was wondering if anyone else was dealing with

Hi Jamie C.,

Firstly, welcome to the BB forums and thank you for posting about your situation! Sorry to hear what you're going through! I know you said you want to find friends your own age, but I just wanted to add in that this is a great place to vent to or get support from people of all ages, and a lot of us have probably experienced similar things to you. This is a judgment free super supportive place to be with lots of people who are here for you. 🙂

I'm 23, but speaking from experience, finding the right friends can be hard, especially when you're a teenager. I went through a lot of friends in my teenage years, mostly because I tried to like things other people liked to fit in and make friends, but obviously I never stuck with those things very long and so the friendships kind of disappeared along the way too. To put it into perspective, the friends I have now are people I didn't even know existed when I was 14/15. The best advice I can give in regards to making friends is to join after school/weekend activity groups in things you're interested in... so maybe a sport, or a painting class, or try and find out if you're school has any groups for things you're interested in. I would also suggest speaking to the school counsellor to find out if she runs any events for the people who see her, or if she doesn't maybe suggest she organise one where people facing similar issues can meet each other? 🙂

Sorry to hear about you and your dad fighting. I think teenage years are the hardest for both the teens and their parents. You probably want to grow up a bit, but he probably still thinks of you as his little girl. Is there another adult you could get to mediate the differences you're having?

In regards to bulimia, I had an eating disorder (anorexia) when I was around your age as well. I'm going to sound like a parent, but if you haven't already, please see the school counsellor, or see your GP, to see what support services are available to you. I know how hard it is to live with an eating disorder, and I know all of the feelings that get you to that point, but it is very important to take those first steps towards treatment before you get very sick. Also, as for not wanting the people around you to worry, that's what they're there for, to help you, and that's what we on the BB forums are here for as well. Learning to love yourself is hard (trust me, I know), but it gets a lot easier when you have support from people around you! 🙂
