I think I'm depressed

I've just started uni and I'm finding it hard to make friends. Mum has gone to England for a year and I miss her, her partner and my younger half siblings so much. My other half sister won't see my dad, and he's got depression, it's like he's a different person.  I find myself not going out, and my self esteem is pretty low at the moment.

Hi audy,

Thank you for your post. I am neither qualified nor willing to take a stab at diagnosing any condition such as clinical depression, but your post sure sounds a lot like you are grieving. That is normal.

Grief is a response to loss and it has stages which we all go through to varying depths and for varying periods of time. Maybe Google "five stages of grief" and read up on it. See if it describes how you have been feeling. There is also plenty of information on this site about depression, if you want to learn about that.

Being sad and depression are two different things, so it might be useful to read up on both and know the differences.

Talking to a GP is another option for you, where a trained professional can make a more objective assessment of where you are.

I'll keep an eye out for your posts, but my fingers are crossed you are feeling very normal feelings associated with these major life events.

Kind regards, John.
