I need help over coming panic attacks and anxiety.

I have been having panic attacks on and off for years. I didn't tell anyone for years and when I finally did my family thought I was looking for attention. My mum has always hated me and no matter what I do it's not good enough. My teachers have started noticing that I'm distracted and it's starting to affect my school work and social life. I just don't know what to do anymore.

Hi there Adri

Welcome to Beyond Blue and thank you for coming here and providing your post.

I’m sorry to hear about the impression your mother gives towards you – and if that is really the way it is, then that’s not good at all.   Do you have your Dad around and is he more approachable for you to talk too?    Or any other siblings?   And do you feel that your mother treats them the same as you?

Without knowing how old you are, I was wondering whether there’s any possibility in you getting along to see a doctor?   But if that is not an option (or even if it is), I would also be advising you to sit down with one of your teachers – one that you feel you get on pretty ok with – and to let them know about how you’re feeling and some other issues also.  I would think that most schools also have some kind of student counsellor available and that your teacher might be able to link you up with this person as well – someone trained and a professional who could help you with your schooling and to give you some hopefully useful advice for the other issues as well.

Would love to hear back from you.

Hi Neil1,
My dad pasted away a couple of years ago. My sister is only little. Thank you so much for your advice I'm thinking about seeing the school councillor and talking to him. My doctor is a family friend and I don't feel comfortable talking to him.

Hi Adriana, welcome to the forums.

Have you used our webchat before? The link is at the top right of the screen, and it's open from 3pm til midnight everyday. You can talk to one of our counsellors in private, and they will have some suggestions for you to help.

There's also the Anxiety section on our website which has great information.

Have a read also through the other threads in the Young people forum, you're not alone in experiencing panic attacks and anxiety and it's good to talk to others going through the same thing. Below are some threads you might like to post in:
