Hi,
wondering if anyone can give me any advice.
ive been at Uni for 5 years and due to my depression have failed at least one course in the second semester. However I thought I would be able to handle this myself and haven't seen anyone about my depression until just last week, as I just broke down. I have now seen 2 GPs, the counsellor since then. Next week I'll be seeing the psychologist, counsellor and GP again.
i was on youth allowance but because I have been at uni for far too long, I don't have any allowable time left, and have been taken off youth allowance a couple months ago. Is there any way I can get back on youth allowance?
Now I am studying a double degree and am going to transfer 1 degree to another (fingers cross my GPA is high enough to do that)
Seeing a psychologist, physio and GPs are expensive even with rebate. They have also suggested I go see a psychiatrist but I just don't have the funds.
I know that I haven't been seeking professional help for long, as it l my been a week. I feel like my case is not strong enough or won't be taken seriously by those at Human Services.
now I do have a casual short term job but that doesn't cover half the expenses.
Any advice or suggestion or words of encouragement would be great!

Hi 🙂
I too am at uni, and have to deal with Centrelink and all the shit they send our way. I'm not sure what the go is when you've used up the "allowable time" as my experience wasn't quite like that.. However if I was in that position, I would perhaps go and talk to them (I know this can take hours because they are so slow) and explain the situation. Before doing this though, it might be worth getting a note from your doctor and the psych/counsellor you're seeing stating why you've been struggling, as proof for centrelink in case they ask for some.
I'm not sure what their "rules" are on youth allowance and when your course runs overtime, but as far as I'm concerned, as long as you're a student and aren't earning too much, you should still be able to get youth allowance of some sort. It might even be as simple as the date you originally put down as your finish date has passed, and centrelink doesn't know you're still studying (correct me if I'm wrong - I'm just taking a guess). If that's the case, it shouldn't be too hard for them to change it back so long as you have proof of enrolment and stuff.
Another option is to become a jobseeker, you can still study while doing this, you just have to go to compulosry meetings every few weeks to show you're "looking for jobs". I had to do this for a bit too - It's annoying but better than nothing.
Other than that, continue to get help. All the help you can get! I'm about to finish my final year of uni (it's taken me 6 years to do a 4 year course thanks to my depression and anxiety and life in general), and it has taken everything out of me to get this far. Your case is definitely strong enough - You're just new to the support side of things. I have failed a couple of units, and redone them and eventually passed. My GPA is a mere 65, pretty low for my course. But I've gotten through with the help of my psych, doctor, friends, and family. I've been seeing a psych for 3 years now, and honestly it does get easier. It's slow, but it does get easier.
Centrelink never gets easier, but it is possible to get them to keep paying you, you just have to chase them up and don't leave it alone until they give you an answer.
I hope this is somewhat helpful, I tried to keep it simple! Good luck, and I hope it eases up for you soon!
