Medication support

Hello

My anxiety started to get worse after a short stay in hospital several weeks ago. Hospitals send me into a meltdown. Because of prior hospital visits have been traumatic with procedures going wrong.I have started seeing a phycologist. My GP suggested I start taking medication. Each day the nausea headaches and feeling very warm at night were getting worse each day.I stopped taking them after 7 days as I was feeling very unwell.Has anyone else had this experience. Now my anxiety has become worse because of it. I have read that medication can take up to three weeks to leave your body. Because of my set back I feel at square one again nervous to leave the house.Any advice Thankyou😊

Hi Leisha

Welcome to the bb forum. Please know that you have arrived at a place of kindness and non-judgemental support.

My daughter's first attempt at medication did not go well. Like you, she experienced a range of side effects and her anxiety worsened. We went back to the psychiatrist and together made the decision to discontinue the medication.

The physical symptoms subsided quickly but not the anxiety. A few weeks later she tried another medication and thankfully it worked for her.

I know it's disappointing but unfortunately it happens with medication. Everyone seems to respond differently; it's a very individual thing.

It's a set back but you're not exactly back at square one. You have ruled out one possible medication. Given it's a trial and error experience this is valuable information. I just truly wish that people like you and my daughter didn't have to suffer to eventually get it right.

Hang in there. I encourage you to go back to the prescribing doctor to discuss the outcome and plan your next steps.

Kind thoughts to you

Hello Leish, and a warm welcome to the forums.

I'm sorry about your hospital visit not being pleasant, I'm afraid that this happens sometimes, but it's always worse especially when you're not looking forward to it and any procedures that have been traumatic, and it's possible it may cause PTSD, although I'm not qualified to say.

Taking antidepressants (AD) which I would think your GP has given you, has always been a concern for many people because what can happen is that they react to the side-effects making them feel ill, so they stop taking them.

If this has happened then can I suggest you go back to your doctor tell them that the AD's are making you feel sick and want to stop them, they could then prescribe another type of AD and put you on a low dose, to begin with.

One AD may work for someone but that doesn't mean it will work for you, as Summer Rose has said.

I tried about half a dozen before the GP found one that has worked and now I've been on it for 20 odd years.

Taking medication along with having counselling is the best way to help you overcome this problem but I'd like to hear back from you, and please know that this site is safe because all of us have been through our own type of depression.

I am only worried about your previous hospital visit.

Best wishes.

Geoff.
