Hi from a Newbie!

Hi, I'm new here.

I'm 33 years young and live in NSW with my husband and two children. My daughter is 7 and my son is 5. I homeschool them both.

I've suffered from Depression and GAD for as long as I can remember. I suffered from mild PND after the birth of my daughter and severe PND after the birth of my son.

I've been on medication for around 17 years. I have an awesome Dr now and she recently changed my meds after feeling like a zombie for years. I was (and still am a little) terrified of changing meds after so long but something had to change. I've been on the new meds for just under two weeks.

Thanks for reading 😊

Hi Tabab

Great to hear from you. Hopefully the change in your meds will give you some freedom of mind to progress forward. It is good that you took the opportunity to post, and love to hear your progress over the next few months, to see that you head in a positive direction.

Hi Tabab,

I am also a newbie on the forums and only recently found that I have GAD after working with my Psychologist for anxiety problems. Until I saw the Phsyc about my anxiety, I did not actually realize how much I avoid new people, environments, social situations etc...

Last year, my current GP moved practice unfortunately at a time where I needed some help, so I just saw the doctor that was on duty. Rather than listen to my concerns he more or less threw a script for meds at me and said that I would need to be on them for at least a year and expect 4 weeks of side effects. After 4 days on them, I felt literally out of my mind (hallucinations) and so frightened that I tracked the previous GP down and was able to get an immediate appointment and get back on track. He was horrified that the other GP had so quickly put me on such meds and said that he had not ever considered that I would need them.

Sorry to waffle on, but the point of my story was how important it is to see the right doctor for you, and keep searching until you find someone that will work with you for what is right for you.

Hoping things start to improve for you.

Regards,

Andrew

Hey Tabab215, welcome to the forums. What you will find is a seriously supportive place that is free of stigma. Fantastic that you are with us.

Good luck with the new meds and hopefully they are settling in well. Look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Welcome to you to Andrew and don't worry, you are not waffling on. Always good to hear someone giving some pretty good advice!

Mark.

hi Tabab, your son is only 5 but there could be a chance that you are still suffering from PND, plus the fact that trying to teach two young children at home wouldn't be the most easiest job for you to cope with.
I don't blame you if you have to change your medication, because that's exactly how I am, we worry the worst will happen and then begin to think in a negative way that any slight change is because of the new medication, whereas it may not be, but that still doesn't help us.
Don't worry about being on any medication for 17 years because there are many of us who have also been on our own for a long time, but it's not how long we have had to take it, it's as long as it helps you, but being on these new med's for only two weeks may seem a long time, but they need to have time to be able to kick in, but you will need to keep your doctor informed if you are having problems. Geoff.

Thanks guys for taking the time to read and reply to my post 😊

Thanks Quiettall, I'm already feeling positive about the change. I see the Dr every few weeks so she can keep an eye on my progress which is awesome because my last dr didn't see me for months at a time and would just write out a new script without asking how I was feeling.

Andrew, welcome fellow nubie 😊 It's really scary that some Drs have that attitude. Is your old Dr too far away for you to keep seeing? I'm really happy with my Dr, she really listens and isn't just about shoving meds down my throat. I didn't think you were waffling on. I love hearing others experiences so thank you.

Thanks Mark! I actually joined a U.K. group without knowing and thought I'd try to find an Australian one. I'm so grateful to be here.

Geoff, that's exactly how I feel with the new meds. Especially after being on the same one for so long. I went to my doc the other day to discuss some minor side effects and she was great and told me to call her anytime if I had any further problems 😊

I really appreciate all of your replies, it's a bit intimidating being in a new group of strangers talking about this stuff but you guys are making it much easier for me 😍

Tabab, fantastic to hear that, aside from a couple of minor side effects, the meds are settling in well. Really good to hear that you went back to the GP and discussed the effects. So many people don't do that.

Also great to hear that you are settling into the forums - it certainly has helped me so much over my journey so thinking you will have the same experience as I have.

Mark.
