SSRI side effects - lump in throat/gagging

Kafilini
Community Member

I had previously taken 2 different atypical antidepressants to help with my anxiety, they helped a little with sleep but not much else.

Last week I saw my GP and she’s put me on a SSRI. I started taking it on Friday night and aside from some very slight nausea I hadn’t yet experienced any other side effects.

However this morning (Monday) I had a weird feeling in my throat, kind of like a lump. Felt like I wanted to gag. It’s been there most of the day. I don’t have any trouble breathing or eating, it just feels a little uncomfortable.

Is this a side effect other people have experienced?

Dear Kafilini~

Welcome here to the Forum. I'm sure this is a a real concern for you. As you have taken different meds in the past and not had this sort of sensation it may be possible you hare having a reaction to this new one.

Everybody is different and can react in different ways.

This is of course is something nobody here on this Forum can comment on. The only and best advice is for you to contact your GP quickly and talk over this and see what their opinion is. If you GP is not available then please contact some other medical professional instead

Please let us know how you get on.

Hello Kafilini, and I join Croix in welcoming you to the forums.

As we aren't doctors we can't qualify what we say, however we can suggest especially if we have been taking an SSRI which I have for over 20 years.

When people start a new AD their reaction could be similar to what others experience, or alternatively, you may develop your own side effects which no one else has had, but by having only 'a slight nausea' is a bonus and this feeling of a 'lump in your throat' could a side effect you are experiencing, but try and keep your fluids up and hopefully, it will go away.

We can be apprehensive starting a new AD, I know I was, as I've tried more than half a dozen, but perhaps we worry about what's actually happening now, rather than what achievement it can do in the long run.

Remember your doctor may have started you on a low dose and then slowly increase it, once it has settled in, but give it a little time, and if you are worried then go back to your doctor.

Please let us know and ask any question you like.

Geoff.
