Self Esteem Therapy

Wanderlust123

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations on therapists who help with self esteem, and hear any experiences people have had.

Low self esteem is something I have struggled with for years, and I do not want to ignore it anymore. I'm exploring options if a therapist is the best treatment available, or perhaps books or workshops might be another option.

I'm based in Adelaide, so if you've had a positive experience with a therapist or equivalent, then please recommend too.

Please let me know if you have any advice on the matter.

Thanks!

Hi Wanderlust123,

Have you looked at the APS website and done a search? You might be able to find someone in your area who specialises in self esteem. The link is here: https://www.psychology.org.au/Find-a-Psychologist

I'd really recommend checking out the Centre of Clinical Interventions website - they have some great workbooks on different topics, but they also have a whole page dedicated to self esteem. Link is here: https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/Resources/Looking-After-Yourself/Self-Esteem

I hope that helps ever so slightly. Good luck on your journey x

Hi Wanderlust123,  We're sorry you've struggled with your self-esteem, this is such a difficult thing to go through, especially over a long time and without any support. It's so good that you're planning on getting some support with this, and we hope the forum is helpful to you in figuring out the best way to go about this.   For treatment and therapies, a good place to start is the Beyond Blue page on Finding Support. Another thing you might be able to look into is NewAccess. It's a free coaching program, which aims to help people break the cycle of negative or unhelpful thoughts.   Please remember you can always ring the Beyond Blue helpline to talk about this on 1300 22 4636. They will help you to plan how you'll access support, and can also help you through the really difficult moments. Another option is to contact them via webchat or email, here.  We hope you find the forum helpful, and find the suggestions and advice you're looking for, please always feel free to update us whenever you feel comfortable.  Kind regards,  Sophie M

Hello Wanderlust123 and fellow Adelaidan!

I'm so glad to hear that you are deciding to seek some help; I imagine that it's been a long kind of journey without getting any sort of therapy or support.

Unfortunately we can't recommend any therapists/clinics here, but you could try social media for personal experiences (such as Reddit for example).

With my own experiences, self-esteem issues are so incredibly common I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't deal with it. I think that it's more about finding a therapist that's right for you and the best fit.

You might want to look into therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). These are really common ones used in therapy and it can give you a bit of an idea of what therapy can look like. 'Mind over mood' is based on CBT, and 'The happiness trap' is based on ACT. I can definitely jump into more lingo and therapy stuff if you like because it's my jam 🙂

Hope this helps,
