Hi.. I have been with my boyfriend for 1.5 years. he developed Depression about 6 months into our relationship. He is seeking professional help and is on medication. His psychiatrist advises me that he will get better but it feels like it has been a long time. When his depression is particularly bad, he tells me he feels he can not take care of me and tries to break up. Is this the depression talking or is this something he really wants?
Any perspectives would be much appreciated.. thank you.

Hi Sophie, welcome to Beyond Blue forums.
Perspective is the word for we are also sufferers.
Most of us accept and realise that depression and other related illnesses will be with us fora lifetime and correct management of these illnesses is the right mind set. This allows you to not have too many expectations and therefore less disappointments which can lead to more depression.
Your partner had low self esteem and worthlessness. This is common. Your partner is doing the very right thing in seeking professional treatment. If I were in your shoes I'd be optimistic and supportive but realistic.
