Staying/Getting/Doing Well – Moving goalposts or fixed target?

Hi, this is my first post, though I have been reading the forums for some weeks. I’m probably expressing myself badly when I say that I have found reading about other people’s journeys reassuring. Finding a community of people who “get it” even when they have a wide variety of experiences and lives lived is not something I thought I would ever find.

Though people talk about getting well & there is a section Staying Well, I’m curious as to what this actually means to other people and how they manage their expectations. I noticed some people refer to being well as ‘being like themselves before they got ill’, whilst others don’t express an exact aim.

My idea of being well has changed over the years. I was first diagnosed as an 8 year old child back in the late sixties. The doctors told Mum that the voices in my head & the sudden crying bouts were because I suffered from ‘nerves’ & I was given meds to calm me. Of course such things were not discussed back then & I was told not to talk about it to anyone, not my school friends nor siblings, just Mum. For decades after my idea of being well simply meant being able to hide my illness from others.

A number of events in my life caused my illness to worsen, until some years ago I became so ill I needed to be hospitalised for my own safety. This lead to my current diagnosis of Major Depression, Anxiety & PTSD. I’m no longer in that dark place, but each day is still a battle (though I can now believe in a future). For now only my siblings & one friend know about my illness, though some things they still don’t know.
So, what does ‘being well’ mean to me, it is ever moving goalposts. If you had asked me 5 years ago would I be as well as I am now I would have thought it impossible as I couldn’t envision a future. If you had asked me last week (during one of my down periods) I would have said my progress was all an illusion & I was fooling myself that things can get better.
For now my idea of being well is being able to believe that things can change for the better, that I will one day be able to manage the everyday things like housework, caring for myself & caring for my dog & maybe, just maybe I will even be able to enjoy myself.

Hi Paws (waves to Grandy, Deebi)

It's lovely to see Woofa's photo again - I've been missing his lovely eyes! I'm glad you've put the photo back up in time for Christmas. hugs.

Hello Dear Paws, Deebi, Hanna and everyone..🤗..

Love the picture of Woofa...his eyes are beautiful..something really beautiful looking into the eyes of animals..they are all so innocent and full of love...beautiful fur companion Paws..

Paws..I mowed yesterday ..had 3 breaks in between...it was so muggy..I would love a ride on mower..but the way my yard is..I would still need to use the push mower....I am pleased that your lawns are done..,Please be very careful of snakes....DecemberJanuary is their mating season and their are all plenty slithering around looking for a mate...

I am on town water..but yucky water to drink..I buy mostly or go to the bigger town and get water..Vinegar is okay for septic systems..I also have a septic system and need to be careful.....Did you know when the bacteria dies off from the septic system and gets a bit on the nose..if you buy a fresh or frozen chicken..drop it in the tank..it starts the bacteria up again...

Well done doing your bathroom..Its really hard to get started..Do you find that once you get started, that you feel better about yourself and doing the job get that tiny bit easier....

I hope today is a good day for you lovely Paws..Deebi, Hanna and everyone.....

Love and hugs lovely people..

Grandy..

Hi Paws

I wanted to check in on your thread, as you're always so supportive to others, including myself, but rarely share what's going on for you - which is fine of course. I'm leaving a big, squishy, virtual hug here for you.

I finally found the nerve to be outside in my yard mowing the jungle that my grass has become... I got changed into gardening clothes & headed out to start the mower... it wont start... it's turning over but it wont catch & roar into life... I don't know if it's a flat battery or what...

Now I'm stressing about getting it fixed... I will have to get the mower place I bought it from to come out here... I don't know if they service on site... I've no idea how much the travel/freight charge will be beside the parts/labour costs... or even when they will be able to come as I'm over 50 min away & they may only travel on set days to outlying areas... I can't take it in myself because being a ride on it's too heavy for me to move when it isn't running so I can't even load it on my trailer.

I was feeling so pleased with myself that I was actually feeling able to mow... now I'm sitting here crying... I know that is silly... but it was a big thing for me being out doors... now I feel like a failure... if I had mowed before now perhaps it would still be running, but I've left it standing too long,,, it's all my own stupid fault.

Dear Paws...

Awe sweetheart Her is a gentle hug for you...

Its okay, Paws..cry if you need to..I wish I was their to catch your tears....

Not sure if you know how to..check the spark plug...if it’s turning over and not catching, maybe there is no spark, to get the motor turning......Just a thought lovely lady...I remember my son saying many times that the spark plug can get a build up of carbon when not used enough..

I know how hard it is to just get outside and I think you are extremely brave for doing that....you got outdoors and that’s a huge achievement..so please don’t be too hard on yourself.....No way.....you didn’t fail...you went outdoors..in my eyes you are definitely a winner....Even if you mowed months or weeks ago...the lawn mower still would probably not start...so again lovely friend...Please don’t blame yourself for something that you have no control over.......

Is their anyone else that might be able to look at it for you?....If you have a local paper, maybe the small classified section might have a lawnmower mechanic advertising in their that’s closer to you...

I really am sorry that this happened to you Paws...and I wish I could be of more help to you.....

My kind thoughts with caring hugs..💭💭🤗🤗💜🌹..

Hello Grandy,

Oh thank you Lass... you truly are an angel... the hug was just what I needed... It helps knowing you get it with how hard you find going for a walk...

Now I've calmed down... I think it may be the fuel causing the problem... the mower has sat for so long the fuel in it has probably gone off... which means it will need a full service... I will give the mower place a call tomorrow & see how I go.

I hope you managed to sit outside at the hospital today...

Sending you a big cuddly bear hug...

Paws

Hi Paws,

I came by and saw you here. Oh dear Paws I am sorry, you got outside ready to mow and it won't go!!!! I wish I could give you a big hug! Little Sam would climb into your lap and lick your face until he made you laugh. It will be OK somehow - someone will come and fix it for you... is there nobody in your town who could take a look at it for you? What a pain, but isn't it true that things go wrong at the worst possible time! Oh gosh and we are so easily overwhelmed because just getting outside is such a big thing to do...

Paws it was great you could get outside and feel up to mowing. Darn the thing for not working but somehow it will be fixed, and you will get out and mow again. Now you know you CAN do it!

A really big hug from me here and lots of soft warm puppy hugs and face licks from little Sam! oxoxoxox

Hey Paws

Mowers grrrrr it really stinks when your mower breaks down.

It's beyond worse when it's taken all your might to get ready to DO IT. I'm hearing you. Huge hugs.

Did you want to put it on the Home Improvements thread?
I ask anything about anything to do with my house on there... also Matchy Mark may know how to fix it on the Gardening thread?

Is it still under Warranty? Just asking.

You just never know... I'm Praying it's something really simple...

Lots of love

Hey Paws

Thankyou also for your last message to me here in AUGUST last year! Gosh I only just saw it now, sorry.

I need to revive the recipe thread, I have an easy Tomato & Zucchini soup that's to die for to go on there... it doesn't SOUND delicious but it's DELICIOUS!! So yummy.
The great thing about it, is that it FREEZES really well.

I like to freeze things like that in single serves, so if I've got a heavy day in the garden it's there to zap and eat.

I cook that one in the crock pot.

Gosh there's another almost off the shelf gourmet recipe that's a GO TO when I haven't had time to shop and we all love it! It may already be on the recipe thread... Fettucine Boscaiola (not sure of the spelling). Not as nice frozen but certainly does well the next day and the day after from the fridge.

Yep I ditched that psych last year and am so glad I did.
Some ppl can only help you "this" far and won't tell you when they've run out of things to help you with... they just want to do other things to keep you.
Still have my Counsellor though... she's awesome. I have an appt tomorrow night with her via phone still, which suits me better.

Love to you all
EMxxxx

Hi dear Pawsy 🤗 and all the lovelies here and out there ☺

You dear lady I'm so sorry hearing about the mower lovey.
I hope it can be easily fixed without much cost.
Good thought Grandy love about the spark plug. I remember Dad cleaning gunk off it especially in the part that sparks. Think it was grease but unsure.
And good thinking too it could be the fuel.
I don't know for sure,,, but if it'd turning over the battery might be ok.

I'm wondering if there's someone around that might be able to help you get the mower on the trailer. ? neighbours.
? In your area there might be a handyman.
Maybe they could quote a cost which hopefully would be a cheaper easier option if with luck it's a smaller job.

I too totally agree you did SO well getting outside let alone ready to mow that would be a big job too if I remember you have a fair area to do.

Try darl as much as you can to refocus on your achievements.
Getting out and ready to do the lawns was huge.
As you well know beasty (depression) makes us unaware of our victories and hyperfocus on negatives.

One of several ways to build more strength is to reverse our thinking.
Why oh why our minds want us to hurt us.

I've had/do have some success again with self or out loud talk saying exactly what those demeaning thoughts are like you're a failure" are a load of rubbish!
Then if you can direct your thoughts to what you did. You achieved dear Pawsy. Victory.

So if a thoughts unproductive don't give it any power by believing it.
Depression closes in on us making it hard to see positives.
By not listening only to the negatives and looking for the goods we're not following through with the down spiral that hurts hard aye lovely. In turn it helps lift the spirits.

I don't at all blame you being upset hun it took so much mental energy to get out. You poor soul the nerves would have been frayed no doubt.
Truly hun nothing at all silly about crying my dear it took a huge amount of courage to do what you did.

I and as you can see there are people that care about you our lovely Pawsy 🐾.
I too would like to give you a warm loving hug.

You're a lovely person Pawsy don't let beasty tell you otherwise!

Leaving you an empty sparkling crystal bowl ... filled with invisible care warmth affection 🤗 support and gratitude for you being such an awesome.
Just gently breathe in deeply and feel the goody's fill your heart with light.

Glad you settled good lady ☺

Deebi ⚘
