Mood and weather

Hi,

Today i woke up and felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath me. The weather was very overcast and very chilly after a period of nice warm days and cool mornings/nights.

Does anyone else experience this when we have a change in weather like this and what things do you do to pull yourself out of it?

Love to know if anyone else has ever had this happen or if it is something that happens when you are feeling a bit flat already.

Gen

Hi Gen,

Thanks for sharing. This is a really important post, as weather can and will have an effect on your mood and that of others. Overcast days expose you to less sunshine, and sunshine (the vitamin D you get from it) is very important to mood. Just the color of a blue sky is much more enjoyable to experience than the grey, cloudy day you describe.

In that situation, I have typically exercised, watched funny TV and had a good laugh, taken supplements (men's multi or vitamin d - but speak with your doctor first as you don't want to overdo either), gone for a swim or sat in the sauna etc. Also, just acknowledging that bad weather is temporary and can not, does not last is very comforting and puts things in perspective for you. Our minds have a problem - they perceive permanence in things (moods etc.) that are simply not nor will ever be permanent. We need to remind ourselves of this.

On sunny days, catch more sun than you normally would. Consider this "storing" your energy and vitamin D for those overcast days. It will certainly help.

You can also do some homework on Seasonal Affective Disorder ("SAD"). This may or may not be what you are experiencing, but learning about it should help nonetheless.

All the best.

Steve

Hi Gen,

I'm hearing you on this one!

The question does go through my mind but not regularly, maybe once a month?

I find that the days where it is overcast, raining or average weather it will make me steer to looking at the glass half empty rather than full.

Like Steve said I think Vitamin D is a big contributor to being healthy and happy (also a nice tan too).

I think that you will always have some bad days which the weather may potentially have contributed to but the trick is just to keep reminding yourself that everyday is a new day and we are very grateful to be living in this wonderful world.

Hope this helps Gen!

Regards,

Chris.
