Burnt out again

I suffered from severe burnout at the end of 2023 and took 6 months off. I returned to work and have been back for a year and a half. I am now seeing signs of breaking again. And I am terrified of pushing myself too far. Today I had a meltdown and couldn’t stop crying. I have booked myself into see my GP. What should I be asking for? Who should I be speaking to at work about this? What can I ask for? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Dear new member~

I'd like to welcome you here to the Forum, a friendly place what there are lots of people with all sorts of experiences, and many of us would like to help

I suppose the first think to ask is it in fact burnout, or have you simply assumed that?

Is it something about the nature of your duties or a matter more closely related to your circumstances or yourself.?

You are very wise not to let matters go too far and are taking action now.  Booking in to your GP will do a couple of things, firstly get you a medical certificate and secondly possible referral to a mental health professional to help you identify the problem, which may be your work, or yourself - or both. If you have a mental health issue then treatment can help and is not scary (I've been there).

At this stage medical advise was what I did, and seems a good starting point for you. You might also like to talk to one of our 24/7 councilors in the meantime.

If  you and your medical adviser end up concluding if it is a particular set of tasks at work, then it might be possible to speak to your boss and see if there are alternative duties you can do.

I hope you can get some advice quickly as you sound not only upset but also worried about pushing yourself too far.

You are always welcome here and if you felt like it you might let us know how you go

Hi there Guest! Might I inquire as to what kind of burnout you experience? Like mental/physical/chronic fatigue? Please try to describe what you mean when you say you suffered severe burnout and it might allow us a little more insight into what you're experiencing.
