Advice for Seeking Professional Help (Trigger Warning- Sexual Abuse, Self-Harm, and Suicidal Feelings)

Hey guys,

My life at the moment is really complicated, so I'll keep it brief:

  • My parents are extremely strict- they don't let me do anything, when my boyfriend (who was also my best friend) broke up with me, they didn't know
  • I was touched inappropriately last year by someone who I had known for years (not a family member, a peer)
  • I suffered from depression(?) after the breakup for about 5 or so months (I don't have a diagnosis because my parents didn't know)
  • I have stopped now, but I had been self-harming for around 2-3 of those months
  • A couple of weeks ago, the depression and anxiety was so bad that I wanted to kill myself
  • I am always anxious- I have a constant feeling of dread in my stomach
  • I have panic attacks frequently that sometimes are for no reason- these involves sweating, shaking, hyperventilating and crying
  • I really hate germs and am kind of obsessed with washing my hair and sanitising my hands
  • A lot of my 'friends' judge me and some of them bitch behind my back
  • I find that my anxiety is not at the front of my mind when I dance or when I am on this forum helping others
  • My ex and I are friends again, but some weeks he ghosts me and flirts with random girls, and some weeks he acts like my boyfriend again
  • I have only recently 'come out' to my parents about being anxious all the time
  • I am going to see the school counsellor on Monday
  • My parents are going to take me to a GP and get a referral to see a psychologist

I would like some advice on how to talk to a counsellor/psychologist and some general info about confidentiality and stuff like that.

Hi Chloe

when you get to your first appt, you can share that thought with them as well. sometimes abit of family history can help. as you go along in therapy and the learn about your behaviours, thoughts etc they will be able to diagnose you as well and give you more supports surrounding that as well.

youve got the ball rolling which is a really good start, its an important first step so very well done.

im also really glad you have family and friend supports too, it makes the world of difference instead of going it alone.

Hello chloe_M, I saw your post elsewhere and came to find your thread so I'm glad to see you here.

It is good to hear about your appointment. Headspace is meant to be pretty good so hopefully it goes well.

In terms of a diagnosis, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The professionals will be able to tell you more and your ups and downs are experienced by many people with and without mental health, let alone bipolar. Even depression can make you feel in the pits one second, then way up high the next. Then if you add on the stress of school, friendships, any hormonal changes...there are many reasons that you could be feeling so wildly different one moment to another, and it may not be bipolar.

That said, it's very hard to deal with and talking to the various doctors is a good way to try to manage the ups and downs. For me, I just try to remind myself that feelings are temporary and to just not overdo anything, whether good or bad. I also try to not feel guilty or bad about things because I am not in control of my feelings. They will come and go, and I just need to remember that I have things to do - feed my pets, finish my work, eat some food, get some sleep.

So routine helps me a lot!

Anyway, let us know how the appointment goes. As startingnew said, you've got the ball rolling now and that's the main thing!

Try not to stress (bad choice of word) over any particular diagnosis at the moment. I have been seeing a psych for 1/2 a year and "all" I have is "anxiety and depression". And each session we chat, and then work on the next issue. I am also not one to the surf the Internet in search of a diagnosis as we can might see elements of ourselves in many form of mental illness. In short, I leave that for the professionals to work out.

(Hopefully) Over time you will see improvements assuming you talk to your counsellor again?

And I am sure that you are doing this, but make sure you are honest with the counsellor about what you feeling or thinking etc. They will not (or should not) judge you, and you know they are there to help you. While this is a virtual space, the people here will also help you with any questions you might have. What you want is the same as us... We all want to get better (whatever that means) and therefore help each other.

I am trying not to worry about diagnosis's and stuff like that, I am trying to focus on what I know and can do to (for now) the anxious and depressing feelings.

I am going to go back to the counsellor, but not till next term. I am going to book an appointment with headspace, i called earlier but they were in a meeting so they will call me back.

Having been reading your posts elsewhere. Great to see you on here even though you're not feeling the best.

Anxiety and depression - comes and goes. Has its ups and downs. As others have said don't worry about a diagnosis. Lets just think about what we can do for those feelings and what happens when you're triggered.

Sit back in your chair and relax the tension in your shoulders, neck, face. Let that tension go from your arms, legs, body, back. If you like relaxing music, put some on. When you're comfortable, start taking long deep breathes. I generally count to 5 as my breathe goes in, hold for 5, breathe out for 5, hold for another 5. (You can do longer or shorter than 5). While you're breathing and counting, think about the breathe going in your nose, your throat, your chest, your lungs and your diaphragm. Keep breathing like this until you settle some more. You can do this breathing as often, and whenever you like.

Next, lets think about things to distract you. A little like what you are doing by being on BB forums. It's helping you distract from your bodily symptoms.

Other very positive things to think about are - grounding activities. Like focussing on what you are eating. Eating slowly. Let all other thoughts go. Just relax.

Mindfulness and meditation are also good. Have a look at some of the threads under staying well.

You have also responded to one of my posts that I put up earlier today about looking at your pattern of thought. You don't have to go there yet. I think first off it's important for you to get yourself calm, relaxed and starting to feel ok. It might take a bit of practice. Once you can manage your symptoms then think about working on what i posted elsewhere (don't rush it).

Anxiety and depression do not get fixed overnight or even in the short or long term. They require ongoing management over time.

that was great, thank you!! It was kind of like the mindfulness course I have been doing on my phone everyday. It really helped me relax. I really want to fix whatever problem I have, so I am willing to put in lots of hard work and effort!
