Hi Gleno,
Very thoughtful of you. To be down on a bad day and you post a thread hoping everyone else is ok. My guess is that you are really down, really down.
By all means tall us more if you want to share. I've had a bad couple of days and know that in the last couple of years this is unusual. Usually its a few hours then I'm fine. So hope you are ok and picking up. If not we are here listening, reading, reaching....

Hi Gleno - thanks for the well wishes!
Agree with WK, very selfless of you to post well wishes to others given that you feel very down yourself.
I note from your introduction post that you are having difficulty going to bed early. I can sympathise with you. Are you able to get a solid sleep once you have fallen asleep, or do you continue to toss and turn. In my case, I tend to fall asleep quite late and then I sleep in about 1 hour blocks, toss and turn, and back to sleep for another hour. I then get out of bed quite early - have coffee and a small amount to eat, then I go back to bed and sleep for another hour or two (thats the best part of my sleep - early morning). But that only works if you don't have to worry about going to work very day - do you work?
I would suggest that if possible, avoid alcohol late at night. Also, avoid coffee after midday. In my case I had to stop drinking alcohol, but (unfortunately) drink endless amounts of coffee. That certainly contributes to my poor sleep pattern.
One thing that I think has helped me to switch off my own thoughts before going to sleep is this (Beyond Blue) forum. In my case, I think it is the fact that I am focused on reading and thinking about others and trying to understand their issues, has turned out to help me. Does that make sense?
The short of it is that I think that you have done the right thing in joining the BB forum. Not only can you draw significant amount of insight from your fellow forum members, but the ability to have somewhere to vent and to discuss issues you would not normally discuss with others may have some healing qualities also.
Take care

Hi Gleno,
This is my first time on beyond blue and a forum but I'm glad I stumbled into your posts. I too gave up work because it was just too hard to keep up the act but I just tell everyone its to spend more time with my kids while they're young...truth is I'm really embarrassed that I can't seem to work out what I'm doing in my life for the next 10 minutes let alone maintain a job. My wife is really supportive and I talk to her when I'm down but most times I hide behind something that's made me annoyed so I can at least give some reasoning to her as to why I'm always bummed or lost. Anyway as I write this first post with a tear running down my face its probably my first reach out outside of my wife. Thanks for showing that you can contact people other than family and having the guts to do it. Enough of my ramble but I just had to. Start somewhere.

dear Gleno, thanks for reaching out to us, but also your friend, as this is important to let those that care and worry about you to be able to know and understand what you are going through, as sometimes this is never an easy feat.
Are you able to contact your friend when ever you need someone to talk to or do you have a couple of other friends who you understand your predicament.
It's good that you have posted on here, as the support group here is enormous, so we hope that you trust us so we can help you. Geoff.

Good morning Gleno - thank you for getting back to us! Nice.
Sounds like your sleep pattern is very similar to mine. Very frustrating! My phsycologist keeps encouraging me to get into a pattern where I get up early - to avoid lying in to mid-morning or later. I have not been entirely successful there - but it does not bother me too much. I have decided to accept the tiredness, and rest when I need to rest. Hence, I now get up early in the morning and then go back to bed if I feel like it. And if I need an afternoon nap, then so be it. By accepting this patter of sleep behaviour, in a way, I am less frustrated by the tiredness that comes with our illness. Not sure what others on this forum think, and it may not be the right thing to do, but it seems to work a little for me. I can do it because I am not working and my children are grown up. What are your circumstances? Do you live with family or by yourself?
Good to hear about you avoiding too much alcohol, it helps. Not so good that having alcohol the other night messed you up so much. I often wonder, how it would affect me if I decided to have a couple of glasses one night. Your observation has given me something to think about!
I know I might be old fashioned, but have you tried lying on the couch with a warm milk or Milo and a light supper while listening to soothing music or talks. This helps also to put your mind more at rest before going to bed (worked for me last night!). I think it was White Knight who has posted elsewhere about soothing youtube links. Give them a shot.
Anyway, enough from me. Hope you had a good night and talk later.
Take care
