Hi guys, I was just wondering if I could ask people for advice/feedback. I've been struggling with depression for a very long time and haven't been able to receive much help due to money struggles and family problems. But lately I have felt very motivated to actually get help as I have made very good friends for the first time. Basically, there is always something going on in my life and I feel just going to therapy or something will not really help at the start. I was wondering if mental health institutes were actually useful or just a scam or bad to go to. I feel like I really need the space to just work through this to get over the really bad part of it right now to be able to come back to normal life. I unfortunately also turn to drugs and alcohol as an escape and also feel I need the environment of not being able to get anything to help me overcome this too. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I would really appreciate it!!!

Hi dr2amaqueen! Welcome to the forums and congrats for identifying the need to reach out! You've literally taken the hardest step already - acknowledging you're feeling a way that you dont' like that want help with. The thing about therapy is that we can never truly know how much it can help us until we take the leap and link in with the right therapist. One word of forwarning - don't be afraid if you don't 'click' immediately with the first therapist you work with - often times it takes a few until we find the one we connect with - that's the same for any medication they might want you to try as well.

Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out, I'm so happy to hear you're starting your journey of improving yourself!
There are loads of free help services you can reach out to if you choose to (including on here where you can speak to a counsellor: 1300 22 4636) and Lifeline (call 13 11 14). Even if you just do a search of mental health organisations, you can chat over the phone or through a web chat with a counsellor.
For substance abuse, you can contact the National Alcohol and Drug Hotline at 1800 250 015.
I hope this helps. Of course, you are more than welcome to keep reaching out on here! Wishing you the best in receiving the support you need 😊

Hi dr4maqueen, first off, it’s really brave of you to open up like this. That motivation you’re feeling because of your new friends is such a powerful thing, hold onto that!
Regarding mental health institutes or inpatient care: they definitely aren't a scam. For many people, a "reset" in a safe environment is exactly what they need to break the cycle of using substances to cope. However, the private ones can be very expensive, and the public ones usually have a specific intake process.
Since you mentioned money is a struggle, the best first step in the Australian system is usually getting a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This gives you Medicare rebates so therapy becomes much more affordable.
If life feels too chaotic right now to even book a regular doctor or sit in a busy waiting room (which I know can be super overwhelming when you're already low), you could look into a telehealth GP. I used platfrom like Beyond Blue, Hotdoc and Hola Health recently to get my plan and referral sorted from home. It was much easier than trying to coordinate a physical appointment when I didn't have the "spoons" to leave the house, and it gets the ball rolling so you can talk to a professional about whether a residential program or a psychologist is the best path for you.
