Getting depression during bad weather?

So recently i havent understood why i have gotten so depressed. My partner says that he has noticed that was a lot happier before, but i hadnt even noticed my mood dropping. I want to understand why this has happened because i want to be happy again, it hurts being so sad. Some people are saying that its because of the weather constantly changing but mostly being cold, rainy and windy all the time. Others say it could possibly be the decrease in hours at work. but i dont know.

Hello and welcome to Beyond Blue. So good you have made it here and thank you for telling us your story.

Depression doesn't need a reason to visit you in the same way that you get the 'flu by contact with someone who has the 'flu. It's all to do with your body and how it functions, hormones, stress, anxiety. There may be no reason you can point to. I suggest first off you look at the information available on BB. Look under The Facts on the blue tab at the top of the page. There is heaps of information for you. You can download much of it or ask for hard copies. This may answer your question to some extent.

There is a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). You will need to see your GP to investigate it further. I understand it happens because in the colder months when there is less sunshine we lose our Vitamin D. However I am not a doctor so cannot diagnose for you. A decrease in work hours may trigger depression if you are worried about your income or perhaps losing your job. Again I cannot answer that.

The best way to find out what is happening to you is to have a chat with your GP. Book a long appointment as the GP may wish to give you a physical check up as well as discuss your psychological mood. It may be as simple not getting a vitamin or or some other element. There are all sorts of possible reasons for you to feel down. I know, for instance, that if I eat sugar I feel miserable.

Make a list of what is happening to you and what you feel. If possible write how long this has been happening. Then take this information to the doctor and have a good chat. Your GP will advise you on the best steps to take.
