Feeling nothing

Seraph
Community Member

Been feeling nothing every now and then. This usually happens when I get overwhelmed with work. I just turn into this passive and unmotivated person. Been having difficulties with trying to be happy.. Happiness has been a foreign thing to me for years now.. I just always feel tired of being here coz i feel like I'm just existing and not actually living. Pardon for the random thoughts. Hope someone can relate and give some advice. Thanks.

Dear Seraph

Hello and welcome to Beyond Blue. Work can be an enormous hole at times as it absorbs all our energy. There is a saying that goes something like, " Get a job you love and never work again." It is important to enjoy the work we do as invariably we would not have the wherewithall to do the other things we love.

Trying to be happy never works. It is such an elusive emotion that slips through your fingers when to you try to hold on to it. Happiness or joy come knowing yourself and liking what you see. What are you values in life, what floats your boat? If you cannot have 'that job' what can you do instead? I was fortunate in that I have enjoyed all the jobs I have had. I think the trick is to be curious about what you do, knowing what happens before and after, and having a good time doing your work. It's a sort of mindfulness/meditation, a keen interest in the outcome of your work that helps to put it into perspective, and the willingness to work at it.
