Exhausted nurse seeks advice

Lately I just feel down all to often. I have friends and family that love me, but I always just feel so alone. I am a nurse so my job involves constantly caring for people and I love it but it just get so exhausting. When I get home all I want to do is sleep so I do, but then in never get to see my friends so this causes me to get even more down. I just don't know what to do! Especially when there is no one to care for me when I get home.

dear Heids, lovely for you to post on this site, but you aren't well.
When we have depression we either want to be alone or we actually feel alone, as it doesn't matter one iota how many people are with us, here we are sitting in a glass cabinet, nobody can speak to us, or if they do, it doesn't register, we can't hear them.
However you really want someone to be there and look after you, someone to lay your head on their shoulder and perhaps cry, and I would think that this is what is happening now, but by having no one increases this sadness, and this sadness is depression.
I would ask your mum or someone else close to you to come and stay with you, because it's this support that is missing.
I also believe that you should take some time off work, because eventually down the track it will become all too much for you and you won't be able to cope .
Is there a doctor or even psych at your work who you can talk to on a regular basis, or they maybe able to refer you to someone outside of your work.
You won't be able to keep on going like this all by yourself, because no one with depression can do this, so you need professional help.
You can try and work under the pretenses of being OK and this means putting on a fake face to everyone, but it's not the solution, because all of us have done the same until finally we can't do it any more.
Your work must be pretty intensive being a nurse, with people ringing their buzzers, wanting this and that, not later but now, so your work limits are heavy and extensive, but it will become too much down the track, so that's why I want you to get the help you need now, before the big crunch comes.

Thanks so much for your reply! I have a weeks holiday coming up so I am going to go home to my parents and see a doctor when I head home.
Work is very intense and I have been doing a lot of nights so my sleeping patterns aren't great either, which doesn't help matters all that much!

dear Heids, that's good.
Are your parents people who understand what depression is, and please I'm not meaning anything insincere about this, I only mention this because there are parents who have different views on the subject.
You seem to be a lovely person, however your work and the different hours you have to work certainly don't help you with this awful illness.
Shift work is bad enough trying to cope with, and all these different hours then this won't help you or anyone with depression, and especially with a heavy work load.
I am worried for you that a week's holiday is not enough time, as I can visage you just falling into a comfortable chair and then not being able to get up, because this chair represents depression and has a hold on you.
The other problem is that once you get to your parents then all you will want to do is sleep, so this is a concern on my part, and the week will be over so quickly.
These much more that I want to continue this reply, all with regard to yourself, but I not going to push it.

Hi there Heids
It’s great that you’ve been able to post here and you’ve received some brilliant replies from Geoff … one of great guys on this site and without doubt the longest serving member as well. I agree with all that Geoff has said and advised.
I do have a concern though that if you go see a doctor when you’re staying with you parents, this will make it very difficult to have any ongoing relationship with this doctor, as after the week is up, you’ll be needing to head back to where you’re living (and working). If you don’t have a GP where you currently are, on this website, Beyond Blue have listed a range of GP’s, that are not only GP’s but they are also very experienced in treating patients with mental health issues. If you are able to do that search you may find one or more in your local area – and then from this, they would be able to determine how you’re going and take it from there.
It’s been a heaps positive step that you’ve made by coming to Beyond Blue … now is your turn to make another positive step to get some professional help. You’ve been battling this all on your own and as we all know, if you continue to battle this alone, it will get the best of you and things will only get worse.
I have a suggestion for this coming week off … it may not be useful, but it’s just a suggestion. Would it be possible for either your mum or dad (or both) to come and visit you? Stay with you, look after you and during this time, you can get in to see a GP that is in your local area? It’s just a thought … And again like Geoff, I hope that you can get back to us to let us know how you’re going?

Hi Neil,
Thats very true about seeing a doctor closer to where I am living, so I had a look at the database type link here that you suggested and found one close to me so I am going to try and get in there before I go away.
Both my parents work pretty much full time so it's easiest for me to go to them, but my mum is coming back with me for a few days to help me move house.

Yeh my parents are very supportive and understanding which is lucky, and so are my friends. I am going back to 8hr shift now which is really good and will help a fair bit. I also have a really great manager so if I need to take extra time off I could.

Great to hear back from you and I know Geoff will be pleased and am sure he'll come here a bit later on.
This is all sounding so positive for you Heids and the support network (not only from here) but your very own one is awesome to hear. Friends, family right through to your manager.
So you said you're moving yeah? Is that a place by yourself and a share place? And my other question is, do you already have a pet? A dog or cat (depending on your preference) can be a huge positive and can also be just the thing to help get you out of bed!?!?!
I do hope you can stay with us to let us know how you're going?
