Depression - I write poems

Hi all,

I have pretty bad depression. My only outlet is writing poems. Don’t know if it helps but I do like being creative and putting my thoughts down. Thought I’d share some of my stuff. Not very good but hope you understand it.

Trees of Self Image

A tranquil roseate forest full of life
Echoing with both sound and silence
You’d think a peaceful place to be
Amongst all its magnetic beauty

There is much we don’t quite know
The constant struggle to survive
The never ending chain of command
The eternal and biter cycle of life

Winged creatures fighting for their nest
The four legged will die for their next meal
Undergrowth begging For attention
And of course the dignified trees

Thick roots always searching the Earth
Heavy limbs writhing and weaving
Contorted boughs searching for the light
Competing for a chance at supremacy

In the silence they shed bark like tears
Through the sounds they hide their fears
A fate that can never be escaped
They can never exist beyond just being

I wonder what Judas was thinking in the forest that day....

C.K.

Hello Costa and welcome,

You're in good company on these forums seeing as you find poetry helpful for you. There is a thread in the social section where people share poems they have written. You might enjoy sharing there too as it will allow more people to enjoy your poems.

Poetry isn't something I know much about but for what it's worth I enjoyed reading your work. Do your poems normally have a nature theme or do they change depending on how you feel?

I hope you find another outlet in these forums. Let me know if you cannot find the poetry thread and I'll seek out the link for you ok.

Thanks Nat. I’ll try look for it.

Dont always use nature but just what I’m feeling at the time. This one is very dark so won’t say too much about what I was trying to say.

thanks for reading.😊

Dear Costa 72

I see you have found the Poetry thread at

https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/online-forums/bb-social-zone/the-poetry-corner---post-your...

and have contributed "Broken Arrow", which I've not had time to consider.

On the other had I have looked at "Trees of Self Image". Lyrics in songs mentioned on this Forum and verse say thngs in a different way to the norm, and are more powerful as a result. Thee is a lot of imagery of what should be a thriving and complex entity, much like a human life, but thoughout there is a reservation, seeing that it is all built on struggle.

Depression is a Judas, being a traitor to your thoughts and effectually bringing you down to a small world, often inducing hopelessness. If you want to take the name further it means a small peep hole, like depression gives you of life, cutting out all the good.

Your thoughts are very welcome here

Costa.

Thnaks fir sharing your poem which is found moving.

I admire the way you can use writing poetry to help yiunhwen depressed,

When I am depressed I find it hard to even lift up a pen or find letters on the keyboard to type.

I know there are books about writing through depression and how it can help.

I can write after the depression has lifted but then it does not have the emotional quality of your writing.

Have youn tried to write prose or to write in a journal?

Thanks for sharing your poem.

Thanks Croix. I feel that Judas is a poisonous betrayal of myself. Appreciate your insight and thoughts.

Thanks Q.

i find it difficult to express verbally. This is a way for me to release thoughts, feelings and yearnings.

Most of them are very dark. There is some light but mostly shadow.

Thanks for reading.😊

Dear Costa 72

I've had time to look at "Broken Arrow" which is a message of hope in its way. For you do have hope, dreams and wisdom and rapture buried inside you as do I and most others.

From my own experience depression is like an iris, a round door closing tighter and tighter, blocking out memories of the whole you, and just leaving no hope, no way out, no you.

The truth is , as I found, they are all still there, just masked away. To expect one other single source is going to break you straight out of it all is maybe a simplification. You are perhaps learning the way is not simple or straight, but it is still a way.

You are right you are master, but helping hands can have their place too, and may come unrecognized, or sought. You post here, that is a seeking as well as a lament.

The only danger here is not to recognize hope. As people get better they naturally stop posting, leaving an impression there is less success than there actually is.

I look forward to your next insight
