Hi alexx1202,

I think the thing with AvPD is to firstly have a diagnosis from a good therapist. Often this disorder comes from the sufferers upbringing or a life event that has led to negative thinking that goes unchecked. It can also be genetic. Either way there are forms of treatment that could help a sufferer a lot.

As I always say, meditation and breathing exercises have helped me a lot to train my brain to focus, breathing exercises have helped me to control my anxiety in social situations. I practice staying focused on my own reactions, I try to forget about what other people are thinking about me, I can never truly know what others are thinking so I give up trying!

Hi Jacko

Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I have AvPD and have found doing martial arts very helpful. Martial arts is very focused on breathing (as you mentioned). From martial arts I also get self respect and I feel more confidant in social situations. It takes away my anxieties about any possible physical attack.

Cheers

I was diagnosed with AVPD three years ago. Finding help is hard. I only have one therapist who has helped others with it, and he says he’s going to help me and then hasn’t. All the articles are “oh I relate to this, do you think I have it?” Not, “here is some actual advice for coping with it”.

Hey everyone, I only just saw this post, so my apologies.

AVPD is one of my diagnoseses, and it feels comforting to know I'm not alone. I'm sorry you all deal with dit too.

It's so difficult to deal with, I feel like barely anyone understands it and just call me overbearing, etc. It sucks.
