Favourite Bands/Singers

Hi guys,

I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies.  I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?

Do you have an album that you listen to over and over?  Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul?  What is your favourite style of music?  Who did you grow up listening to?

Are you a musician yourself?

And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up 🙂

As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio.  The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story.  I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching.  that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.

I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots.  I love em!  Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me 🙂

Hi Scott

I'm loving your list of favourite songs and musicians.

How was your weekend? Did you enjoy seeing Bruce Springstien?

you have great taste in music scott, Nevermind and Throwing Copper are 2 of my all time favs - they are both a little before my time, i think i was only about 12 or 13 when Kurt died, but my sister was a massive fan so drew me in 🙂

Van Morrison is a great choice love his stuff

Also with best live acts, i would like to throw 2 more names out there that are sensational live - Area 7 and The Living End

Worst live acts...Killing Heidi and Jebediah...

Jebediah played at my uni in o-week one year...they were the "lead" act and were well any truly shown up by their support acts, Pollyanna (which just happens to be my daughters name) and Betchadupa (Tim Finn's son's band) - both of whom were sensational, but jebediah sucked

Matty,

Area 7 are phenomenal live!  Wow, I'm having a flashback to when I was 15 or so and getting squished in the mosh pit.  good times 🙂

I've never seen Jeb live but I did love their albums. I went to school with some of the members of Killing Heidi, so I saw their live performances more than I really wanted to. lol. They were an ok band, and geez they worked hard... but it's hard to really be a big fan of people you've sat behind on the bus while they gossiped or who were mean to your friend.  😕

Area 7 along with most ska bands are sensational live

The Porkers (a newcastle based ska band) played at o-week once too, they were also awesome, just so full of energy, bouncing around the stage all night, love it

And ive never been a fan of killing heidi, and on stage they were just boring

And like i said Jebediah sucked live, i also liked their first album, but man they sucked live, no presence

If youre an aussie music fan, see if you can catch a show of the pictures, Davey Lane from You Am I is the front man, they are great...

There used to be an awesome pub in bendigo called the old crown that played great live music every week, but then they went all yuppie 😞  when i was 18 when it was good they used to have a sign saying "no shirt no shoes no entry after 10pm" lol but man the live music was awesome, the only thing i didnt like was my older sister used to hang out there too which was a bit of a buzz kill haha

It's been years since I listened to You Am I... so I'm definitely going to check out The Pictures like you recommend.  Right now in fact. lol.

Dammit Matty, you are bringing back so many memories of my misspent youth! I'm going to have to dig out all my old albums. I should have an Aussie music party.

Hmm, now I wonder where my Jet, Something for Kate and Eskimo Joe CDs ended up?

You have such awesome taste in music.  You're listing some of my old faves right there.

Regurgitator's old stuff was the best.

I replied to this yesterday but ti never showed up lol...

I agree The Gurge's older stuff was there best, each new release got weirder and weirder, and then they did that thing where they lived in a bubble in melbournes federation square, WTF? lol

Tu Plang is an awesome album and still one of my most played i love it

Also a massive fan of early Spiderbait...they are very much under appreciated

And have you heard the mix of the 2? Happyland? Janet from spiderbait and Kwan from Regurgitator, they are a weird mix but it works lol

I had forgotten about that bubble thing they did.  lol.

And yeah, I love Happyland.  I wish they'd done more stuff.

Hi there

Thought I’d chip in here with a new one that I’m going to add to my iPod … ‘Five Finger Death Punch” – pretty heavy stuff and only found out about them as my son (15yo – and is aspiring to be a heavy metal drummer and he goes awesome even after only a couple of years at it) and partner went to Sydney yesterday to Homebush for the Soundwave Music event.  Something like 40 or 50 bands at the Showground and from what I heard, they loved it. The first band they saw was the one I’ve listed above and I went and had a listen and yeah, it kind of pushed a “like” button inside me.

Back to Aussie bands, how about Paul Kelly and his Coloured Girls, Mental As Anything and the superband AC-DC.

Cheers all

Neil
