Favourite Bands/Singers

Hi guys,

I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies.  I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?

Do you have an album that you listen to over and over?  Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul?  What is your favourite style of music?  Who did you grow up listening to?

Are you a musician yourself?

And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up 🙂

As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio.  The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story.  I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching.  that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.

I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots.  I love em!  Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me 🙂

Because of this thread I've been listening to my old favourites from when I was a teenager.  I'd forgotten just how amazing some of those songs were.

Does anyone remember Jimmy Eat World?  Their song 'hear you me' was on heavy rotation in my room when I was young, also pretty much every song on their album 'futures' will get me experiencing 'the feels.'

Also, the song 'unhappy' by Lincoln was pretty much the story of my high school years.  It's really quite depressing, but I loved it back in the day because it meant that someone else understood what I was going through.  Highly worth a listen.

I've also dug up some of my Everclear CDs.  I really love the album 'songs from an American movie Vol 1.'

And finally, I've been revisiting Eve6.  Did anyone else ever listen to them?

Hey all ...

Jess provided a response to Matty on another thread and she mentioned the words along the lines of:  "people come and people go" and that prompted me to think of the song in the 1970's (or was it the '80's) called:  "It's Your Life".  The supergroup that performed that tune were also responsible for such classics as:  "Lay Back In the Arms of Someone", "Do To Me", "I'll Meet You At Midnight" ... any one guess them yet?  And of course their Number One Chart Topper:  "Living Next Door To Alice".

Yes people, the band was/is Smokie.

My bro's daughter-in-law (is that right?  as in, my bro's son has married a wonderful person by the name of Carol) and my bro simply refers to her as "Smokes", which is short for, or a play on words on the band "Smokie", because of their other huge hit, "Oh Carol".

And who could ever forget the classic duet of Chris Norman (Smokie's lead singer) and Suzi Quattro as they performed "Stumblin' In".

Yeaaaahhhhhh !!!!

just to revive a slightly old thread..

One band ive gotten into lately is the Artic Monkeys - triple M have been playing them a lot

One girls name I really like is the title of one of their songs, and i have suggested it to Katy who also likes it, is Arabella...

The other song of theirs i really like is Why Do You Only Call Me When Youre High?

Both songs worth listening to 🙂

Hi All,

Thanks for reviving the thread!

I like heaps of music but don't listen to the new stuff much these days.Have heard of the Artic Monkeys but know none of their songs. Will keep an ear out for them.

I listened to a lot of David Bowie when growing up. Led Zep and Pink Floyd too.

Mostly I like alternative music and some mainstream. My favs include Echo and the Bunnymen, Ed Kuepper, formerly of The Saints, ACDC, Pixies, The Fall, a band from Northern England, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, Midnight Oil, Liz Phair and many more.

A few good albums by The Fall are Hex Enduction Hour, Kurious Oranj and Bend Sinister. They have a lot of albums. One of their claims to fame was having a song, Big Priest? played during the Silence of The Lambs film. They are alternative, hard to describe.

I must quickly mention Liz Phair. She is a great songwriter/performer from America.Worth a listen to! esp. her 1st album called Exile in Guyville.

Also Lou Reed's album The Blue Mask comes to mind it is pretty special.

Finally I'll praise Frank Black aka Black Francis from Pixies. He's had some great songs - one of my favourites is a guitar driven piece called Threshold Apprehension, one I could relate to.HA Ha.

The Australian music show Rockwiz comes back on Mon 24th March 9:30pm (SBS I think)

Henry

Henry, thanks for sharing.

Most of the bands you've mentioned were a bit before my time and I feel like I missed out on a great era in music.  I grew up listening to jazz or country/folk records - Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Eric Bogle etc...  It wasn't until the mid 90s that I heard other types of music.

I have heard a lot of Lou Reed's music, and I love it.  Maybe I should track down an album and listen to his some more.

As for recently released music, has anyone heard 'I am Mountain' by Gungor?  It's a great song!

Yes, because of my old age (lol) I'm 53, I can recall that the 70's and 80's had some fantastic music but I never got into jazz or country, not sure why? At one stage I had nearly all Lou Reed's albums. I like The Blue Mask (a wide range of beautiful and chilling songs with awesome guitar) and Street Hassle, the best but there are a lot of other good ones, as you would know.

One modern band I forgot to mention was Antony and The Johnsons. They are really worth a listen to. Haunting, exquisite.

I heard "I am mountain" by Gungor. What a top song! very catchy. I like James Blunt's new one too!

This is so cool - and lots of folk who are my generation.  I'm going to lay some of these on you:

Of course, there were "The Eagles" - my partner and I went to the SCG back, gee, would have been mid '90's for their "Hell Freezes Over Tour".

The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

Fleetwood Mac

And two of the more funnier ones:

Joe Dolce; &

Racey.

Dear younger folk - have a google of the last two, Joe Dolce with "What's A Matta You";   and Racey with "Lay Your Love On Me".  The video clip is hilarious.

I've always liked Superchick. Songs like 'One More' and 'Breathe' really keep me going!

dear All, well not too sure who to address this to, never mind, but I am a romantic with songs and Celine Dione 'The Power of Love' is beautiful, oh no where are the tissues. Geoff.
