Before my health went south I was a builder in all aspects of home construction and renovation. If you don't have a handyman around I hope I can offer you some tips that may be of help. I have had many years of experience in home renovation and will do my best to help you out if you are stuck and need some advice
I hope my experience may be of help to the people on Beyond Blue and make their life a little bit better. Even if you need help with the most basic painting job or putting up a shelf I can help there too with some tips
I will do my best to get back to anyone that has a question when I can as this is social yet important thread

Hi Rx, just curious about the fascia boards and the condition of the gutters, they are a pain to replace.
The rubber at the back of the toilet where the pipe from the cistern goes into the toilet is it crinkly, so when you flush the toilet, is there water on the floor.
Take Care.

Eh Geoff.
Mate gutters and facia's all good , really good replaced by the look say 20yrs ago guessing, same with toilet.
there's only one stretch of bad gutter above back so that's getting at the facia a bit on that stretch but new gitter and paint would fix it.
This place , man you couldn't get a better renovator because the whole place was gone over guessing 20yrs , inside and out. they lined the walls inside and put aluminum gladding , facias , some new roofing even 4in bats in ceiling. and replaced most windows and restumped . Also a lot of power points and new power board.
So although it looks a bit rough right now it'd be amazing what some paint and a few nails and simple tidies outside would do , and inside paint kitchen bathroom and just light jazzing up and it would look a million bucks. Even with the cladding because the way it is l could still incorporate wood trim and nice facias and stuff that would completely tale that cladding look away. Just very light cosmetic stuff and it could be a stunning house even with the cladding. That's why it's almost painful to not do it but if l'm selling which l probably am, not sure if it'll be worth my while so all on hole until l get agents out.
But it's a funny house and with the gladding it's a bit scary at what might be underneath and why did they recover inside and out and everything all over the way they did, even the floor inside, was it totally RS underneath everything, you know.
The front room was , when l turned that into a deck , and started ripping off cladding and wall lining oh an she was nasty underneath. They're masters at covering up aren't they l discovered.
But , that front room was the original porch too they just walled it in but it cops all the weather too. l think whatever's underneath or how run down , it's got mostly great bones with great hardwood and seems to be solid as a rock apart from the old front porch/room.
Think there's some cement sheeting underneath on the older part of the house.

Hi RX, sounds like it's all good, but will come back later and see about something else.
Good on you.

Hello Geoff,
I am just wondering, is there a special kind of anti-mould pain you can use on ceilings and both interior & exterior walls?
Ours is an approx 160 year old cottage. On the south side especially, the exterior walls get mouldy in the winter. Our ceilings also. We want to repaint in the next 12 months, and is there a special paint to look for that repels mould?
Thanks Geoff 😊

I just checked all my screen caps, according to Mathy, all Taubmans indoor paints have mould inhibitor. Not sure about outdoor ones. The posts said you can buy it and add to paint, but use protective equipment and of course clean the walls well with 1 part white king or domestos bleach (must be those brands apparently) to 4 parts water and scrub/clean well. Selleys or 30 seconds brand mould remover are also mentioned, but I'm all for doing things cheaper!
I hope that's enough info to go along with - saves you having to read back

How can l kill house odor ?
Tell ya , l'm really pleased there's a few women here too because this might be their area.
This place has that older musky house smell when you walk in , not only do l hate it but it's very embarrassing .
Yet , after nearly two years, what was the girls room before and now it's my daughters room , still smells gorgeous , perfumy and girlie stuff. The rest of the place though , not good.
Is there something simple ?
l know there's those wall can spray things but the spray this crap into the air once a minute every minute , your breathing in whatever craps in them 24/7 and buying new cans every 5minutes.
Is there something long lasting that l can just put in a few caps or lids and leave around the place.or anything else.
l really love vanilla btw , l use one of the car dash things in the car , lasts about 6mths.
Cheers
rx

I'm not sure about anything long lasting, but citrus (the rind is the strongest smelling, I think), vanilla essence or extract and bi carb are my go to's for odours. You could also try peppermint oil or teabags (a good bug repellent apparently, also).
