Hi,
I have thought for a long time that I might have social anxiety and I would really like to seek help for it, however, the idea of having to go through a GP to get a mental health plan to then go see a psychologist is exceptionally overwhelming, and I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and how they overcame it.
Thanks

Hi Jskyewalker,
Thank you for your post. I do not suffer anxiety but have been in a long term relationship with a lady that did/does, so I have seen how it can affect people.
I do not know where you live (I'm in Sydney) and we have access to after hours G.P.'s that do home calls and that bulk bill. The conditions are that it is only out of normal G.P. operating hours but it means that (if it is available where you live) you won't need to go out to see the G.P.
I do think seeing one and seeing about a Mental Health Plan is a very good idea for you. Check out this or a similar site; http://www.homedoctor.com.au/
Kind regards, John.

dear Jskyewalker, welcome to this site and thanks for posting your comment.
How have you gone with the site our good friend John has posted to you, and can I please tell you that the first visit to our doctor is also very fearful, wondering whether or not he/she will believe in what we are saying, but can I say is that there are so many people suffering from any type of depression who have to see their doctor, it's never an easy visit, but normally the doctor will pick it up and realise that you are having a hard time.
They are well and truly qualified to pick this up even if you don't say that you are, then they will begin the recovery program which you will need.
Perhaps you could just write down on a piece of paper on what is troubling you, this doesn't have to be long , just a plain and simple few lines, like 'I haven't been feeling well lately, I think it could be from social anxiety', that's it nothing more or nothing less, straight to the point, then he/she will just ask a couple of questions.
I was as nervious like hell before I saw my psychologist and had cancelled an appointment or two, until I finally had to see someone, and this lasted for 20 odd years visiting her.
Please I know it's difficult but the sooner the better, because you can't put off till tomorrow what you can do today', so please let us know how you feel. Geoff.
