Hi jan p

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing significant anxiety- not being able to communicate can be incredibly frustrating too. It's good that you are reaching out to a professional like a doctor, and it's understandable you want someone trustworthy, as you say. If you'd like further support, you can head to the Beyond Blue Support Service provides advice and support via telephone 24/7 (just call 1300 22 4636), daily web chat (between 1pm–12am) and email (with a response provided within 24 hours). You can also talk more about what kind of services you are looking for here, on this thread, and receive general peer support for your anxiety.

Hi Jan P,

It can be difficult finding someone you trust and someone that is the right fit for you. But it may be worth contacting medical practices in your area to see if there are any doctors/GPs that have an interest in mental health. You may also be able to look online at the medical team at a practice to see if any of them have additional qualifications in mental health or if they are interested/specialise in mental health. Your local community mental health centre may also be able to advise you on doctors that could help you. If it is an option for you, you may also get a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP to see a psychologist at a reduced rate for up to 20 sessions.

I really hope that you are able to get the support you need for your anxiety. It sounds like it is quite debilitating for you. Please don't hesitate to chat more if you feel like it.

Take care.

Dear Jan p~
I can sympathize with your feelings of needing a doctor to help you but being very wary, and want one who will take time and understand.
Like many people I wish I new the answer, early on I'd try whoever seemed available, and that did not help a great deal and I had to keep changing.
I guess the two things you can do are firstly in any medical center ask if there is GP who had a special interest in mental health, if not try another center, and of course use word of mouth if you can. You may have freinds you have mentioned a GP they get on well with .
It is in fact due to people's recommendations I ended up with an excellent GP who in turn suggested a particular psychiatrist. It has worked out well.
Having an anxiety condition simply mkaes the whole matter worse and trying to make a decision becomes seemingly fraught with danger.
Perhaps if you can remember you are in charge and can firstly discuss the matter and then actually change if you find the medical professional is not giving you what you need. You are right in that you do need to trust, and that can come after surprisingly few consultations if the person is concerned for you and talks sense in an understandable manner.
I, who also have an anxiety condition, have found in the past sometimes it helps to have somebody go with you to the doctor's and bring you back after.
Do you mind if I ask what support you have at the moment? Is there someone in your family or a friend you can share this burden with, not necessarily to fix things, but just to listen and care so you do not feel quite alone facing all this.

Hi jan p

Ah, I see. Do you have a network that can suggest a good doctor to you? Or you could also contact your local council and see what they say- they may be able to point you to some good directories of doctors who can provide the kind of care you are after in extra accommodating environments.

Hello janp, I'm sorry to hear that.

Have you tried asking your local Doctors Clinic or other ones nearby if they have any GPs that specialise in mental health?
