My anxiety has gotten so bad I can no longer work

Its been a little while since I posted my first discussion and I ended up quitting my job to help my anxiety but it has now gotten to the point I am afraid to work.

I took steps to try help myself I got a mental health plan, I booked in for counselling session, and I’ve been re-applying for jobs even went on medication. But I now have so much anxiety I can’t even bring myself to go to interviews. I have to work in order to have an income, I can’t get government assistance as I’m not an AUS citizen but it’s now gotten to a point I can’t work, I can’t leave my house, I can’t do anything without my anxiety controlling me. I’m just kinda stuck. If any body knows any support websites or organisations I can contact it would be a great help.

Hi Nelle__09,

Welcome to the forums and thank you for posting here. I'm sorry to hear that you have been struggling with anxiety and job hunting recently. I have also been job hunting and am aware of how anxiety provoking and demoralising it can be. I just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

It's great to hear however that you got a MHTP and are booked in for a counselling session. I suspect your psychologist will talk about ways to handle your anxiety around leaving the house and going for interviews. Usually it involves cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) where you slowly learn strategies to manage your anxiety in increasingly stressful situations. You might also learn some relaxation techniques like the ones listed here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/staying-well/relaxation-exercises

I'm sorry I'm not aware of any specific organisations for specific anxiety/phobias but hopefully someone else on these forums might be able to help out. However you can find some general information about it here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/anxiety/types-of-anxiety/specific-phobias#:~:text=You%20may%...

I hope some of this info helps. Please keep us updated on how you're going and remember to reach out if you're not travelling well. If you ever need to talk to someone you can always contact the counsellors here 24/7 over the phone or online chat by going here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/talk-to-a-counsellor

Bob 🙂
