Mental breakdown.

Hi all, for years I felt a mental and/or nervous breakdown coming on and tried really hard to prevent it. However, about 4 years ago I had a complete meltdown mentally, and my anxiety attacks got much worse. I know it was because of bottled pressure building up over many years. Since my breakdown I've come close to having potentially serious car accidents because the anxiety attacks would come anywhere anytime. Furthermore, I can not forgive myself for the way my breakdown scared my two sons. They were traumatised by it. I have literally begged my GP to do something to help me but he seemed annoyed that I even raised the issue. He put me on one mild medication that doesn't help at all, and I know, under my current circumstances that I'm heading for another breakdown.

Hello Mal50
I am really sorry for the dark place you have found yourself in. Anxiety disorder can be serious problem. I understand as I have had severe anxiety since 1983 including the difficulty in traffic..I still remember the severity of having an anxiety attack in traffic..It was awful
Your anxiety is what I had...My psychologist called it 'free floating anxiety'. The just seemed to come out of nowhere. Your sons would have been scared and also sad that you were in such a state. If I may ask you...how old are your sons?
It is good you saw your GP and may I say I am surprised and sad with his re-action. Severe anxiety is debilitating and no different to a physical illness and should be treated as such. I know you are mentally exhausted right now Mal but is there any chance of finding another GP? Even through word of mouth....ask people you know of they have a good GP and book in.
When my anxiety was chronic like yours, my female GP put me on a small dosage of AD's...even though they are an anti-depressant my anxiety reduced by approx 70% in a couple of weeks. Of course that is only my experience. The meds werent a cure all...they provided me with a foundation on which I could rebuild my mental health combined with regular counseling.
Regular counseling and GP support right now Mal. It is an awful place to be in for you. I can see you are doing everything you can. I really feel your pain and how disabled you feel right now
You are not alone here Mal. I just hope some of this has been of help to you.
My Kind Thoughts for You and your Sons
Paul
