Avoidance & relapses

Hi everyone,
I have been a sufferer of anxiety for a few years now and also went through a period of depression. I only just joined today as I am feeling quite useless and disappointed in myself after an event this morning. I have been really stable lately. I have managed to take control of my anxiety and have been quite proud of myself.
I just started in a highly acute area of nursing in the last month which is high stress. I surprised myself and others by facing this huge fear of mine and have managed pretty incredibly in some emergency situations. I haven't had a panic attack since I've been working there.... Until this morning....
I can't figure out what triggered it but I could not get out of my car to go to work. The usual symptoms were back - chest pain, breathing troubles and the overwhelming feeling that I "can't do it". It truly felt like I was going to die by going into work. So I called in sick and went home feeling like a failure. I am good about avoiding anxiety, it feels so much better initially and then the sense of failure and embarrassment kicks in. I am also now anxious that I am wasting my sick leave and am going to get fired. Such an awful cycle!
Can anyone tell stories of how they overcame their relapses? Or any avoiding "avoidance" strategies? Or any nurses out there who can relate to my job anxiety?

It sounds like you have awareness of yourself Sami15, have you found something that has worked for you in the past in this sort of situation? This is a high pressure situation that most of us would not cope with, but maybe this is just a blip on your radar that you learn and grow from, Top Gun style (can't believe I said that). You should be proud of yourself, you have put in great effort, i think you are terrific!
Have you a psych you can talk to? Something that works for me in certain circumstances...action cures fear. And Love, you can't have love and fear in your heart at the same time, (takes practice) think with love of the people you are about to save as you park the car. Did I mention you are terrific?

I think in the past I have reminded myself that I have always coped and I am still living and breathing today so whatever happens, I can cope! I like the "action conquers fear". What do you mean by that exactly? Love is a strategy I use a lot. I picture my loved ones and know I will be with them at the end of the day. I also love visualisation. E.g picturing how proud I will be at the end of the day and how sweet my days off will be when they come.
Thanks for your kind words!

Dear Sami
Yes I have had some doozies in the past. Even ended up in hospital on a couple of occasions. Welcome to Beyond Blue and the comfort of knowing you are not alone.
Panic attacks are the pits. But you sound as though you have some coping strategies. The "I've been here before and survived" is great. Not sure what Jacko meant by "action conquers fear" but my guess is that when you are doing something the brain cannot maintain its grip on your fear. And that's true as far as I am concerned.
What do you think would have happened if you had called a friend or family member when you felt the panic starting? Talking for 10 minutes may well have calmed you down enough to beat it and move to the next thing to do. In this case, going to work.
Yes you feel a bit shaky afterwards, but there is no reason why you cannot make a cuppa and take a few deep breaths at work before you start your job. I have found this works for me and if I do it early enough I miss the worst of it.
Visualisation id great. I picture myself in a little boat floating down the river. I got that image from a book called Living With It by Bev Aisbett. 'It' is anxiety and the book is great. Very small and easy to read. I recommend it to you. Quite funny in parts too. It has some other good strategies.
Hope all of this helps.
Mary

Good to hear back from you Sami15.
'Action cures fear' for me means...just do it! I can focus on the reasons I can't do something or, I can just start doing it, the action redirects my focus and I get strength from overcoming my fear. Sounds like love is a way to go for you as you have mentioned. Love that you are a sensitive thoughtful person, love that you have a journey to go on, love that you can cope.
