Ive been having anxiety the last few weeks and went to my doc today to discuss it. He gave me medication and I'm going to make a mental health care plan tomorrow...also, my parents dont think its anxiety, they think its my heart...ive been to a cardiologist and it was fine...they just don't understand. I feel alone and scared.

Hi Downandout1,

It’s great to hear that you've made the step of going to your doctor to discuss your anxiety, that’s a huge accomplishment in itself!

I’m sorry that you do not have your parents support at the moment while going through all this, it must be very overwhelming. Even if your parents don’t understand your anxiety do they understand that you are struggling? Do they know how your anxiety is affecting your day to day life? By giving them examples of how your anxiety is impacting you may help them better understand what you are going through (i.e. I am so anxious when I am at school that I sometimes feel physically sick or my anxiety stops me from...).

It may be scary, but one thing I would suggest is to keep reaching out for support. Even if you have to ask your doctor or school counsellor to help explain to your parents what you are going through, or it may be more comforting to write your parents a letter to share what you are experiencing. Whatever you feel most comfortable with, planning out what you are going to say may help relieve some anxiety and just know that it may take more than one time to get across to them how you are feeling. It may be frustrating but hang in there, we are here to listen and help you along the way.

See you around,

Sammy

Hey Downandout1,

Sammy has mentioned some great things above and I will try and not repeat anything she has mentioned.

Sorry to hear that your struggling at present and I can absolute relate to how your feeling at present. I suffered from severe depression and anxiety for 6-7 years. It does get better though and these feelings that your experiencing at present will end and you will get better.

It is super encouraging that you have been to your GP and taken the important first step. This is extremely brave and courageous of you and early intervention is the way to go. The medication will be extremely beneficial to your condition and the mental health care plan will enable you to receive a minimum of 10 subsidised psychologist appointments. The psychologist in partnership with your GP will put in place a suitable treatment/intervention plan for you.

Furthermore, it is extremely encouraging that you have had your heart checked out by a specialist and that it was fine. Ensuring that you have had tests done will do wonders for your anxiety and it is always better to be safe than sorry!

You are most definitely not alone and what your experiencing is normal and far to common. It is okay to be scared. I was too. The good thing is it can get better and will get better. You are seeking professional assistance and are extremely aware of your feelings. This is amazing. Anxiety and your feelings at present are temporary and better days are absolutely ahead.

Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Nick.
