Anxiety affecting work performance

Hi,

i have recently joined the forum to try and get some help and support for my crippling anxiety.

I work in an emergency service and over the years I have noticed my anxiety being more prevalent.

Although now it has reached a point where it is actually affecting my work performance. I am so paranoid about what my colleagues think of me and how I go about my work day that I avoid certain situations. My mind races, I forget things and I can’t concentrate.

I know that I am not reaching my full potential. I know that if I don’t change things, I’ll be disappointed later on because I could not achieve my work goals. I know I am capable of so much more, but when it comes down to it I hide away and am afraid to make decisions for fear of judgement.

When I was very junior in my role I was quite badly bullied. I was made a fool of by someone as I was still learning and they did not have the patience to deal with it. Following that I have been very embarrassed and felt like everyone was judging me.

i have been on medication for depression before, however that made me gain a significant amount of weight and I hated it. I am not depressed at all now, just anxious.

How can I get better and start to get on top of my work again? How can I start focusing and remembering things?

Hi Taylz2029,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you find some support here.

Do you have access to an Employee Access Program through your work? Usually you can get some free counselling sessions with someone who understands the field you work in.

Medication isn't the only solution. You can always ask your GP for a referral to a psychologist, or try some meditation / mindfulness.

Do you have anyone at home you can talk to? Family or close friends? It's important that you let someone know how you are feeling. You don't have to hide it. Most people out there suffer from mental health issues at some point.

Please keep posting & using the forum when you need to!

Kind thoughts, Jess

Hi Taylz, hopefully you can get past this. You will need to learn how to be 'mindful'. It is very difficult a d tiring, but you need to keep your focus on the here and now. Take a moment to notice sounds, smells, how things feel around you. This will help you to be in the here aND now and make it easier to focus. When somebody goes to speak to you take a deep breath a d remind yourself to listen to them aND not your thoughts. The are many online apps that can help with this or a visit to a psychologist may help.

Hope this helps a little
