Worried about Mental Health (how to tell parents?)

I've been worrying a lot about school, band, and pretty much all work-related stuff, as well as my social situation, for about a year maybe, and I'd always been intrigued my mental health. So, recently, I was looking around and I found Borderline Personality Disorder, which I related to quite well. I've talked to my friends about it for a few days, and I've decided I should tell my parents, but I'm not sure how. Any help or suggestions would be great, just thinking about telling them makes my stomach churn and makes quite anxious.

Hi Lolly

Paul here and thanks for posting on the BB Forums

Even though I dont have BPD I would probably tick all the boxes for having it. It doesnt mean you do Lolly. You are an intelligent and well articulated person.

Being intrigued and being worried about your mental health are two different things altogether Lolly. If you are 'looking around' on Google the information can be very generalised and fit nearly anyone. If you are  using Google as a research tool try to have a look at the info here on Beyond Blue.

If you are still concerned have a little chat with your GP (they are bound by privacy regulations) and let her/him know what you have been thinking about. Nothing to lose and everything to gain Lolly....

In regard to telling your parents....if you are happy with that...tell them...and stand by your decision to tell them too. You are a strong person, especially by posting on our forums 🙂

Simple options available to you Lolly...

* See a GP....they are well trained on these matters nowadays..and then tell your parents..OR

* Just tell your parents...they will most likely respect you for letting them know..and you will feel a lot better after telling them..

* Be kind to yourself....BPD can apply to nearly anyone

Your topic is great Lolly and it would be great if you could respond to us and let us know how you are going 🙂 There are so many wonderful and caring people on here. Here if you need us

Thanks for the hasty reply Paul,

I have thought about it, and it is very possible that this is just me attempting to rationalize my struggles during the past few years (you know the general spiel about teenagers), but nevertheless I do feel there is a need to get looked at by a professional, even if it's a 'just in case' scenario. Thank you for the suggestions, and will do my best to act on them.

Hey Lolly

No problem at all. The main reason I mentioned a GP over a psychologist/psychiatrist is that there is less stigma involved in seeing a GP. And I do remember the spiel about teenagers even though computers weren't invented yet when I was a teen...lol

You have great communication skills Lolly. It would be great if you wish to let us know how you are going

Be Kind to Yourself
