I recently explained to my school why I have t been there for a couple of months because I'm have depression and anxiety and find it hard to leave the house/ be around people, and there response was that I need to deal with it and I'm no longer enrolled in the course I was doing. This was so hard for me to do as I hate telling people and They have made me feel like an alien, I hate this feeling of being so helpless and different. I hate myself for feeling the way I do, and it's times like this when people can't be a little understanding that I don't want to be here.

I can relate as I have been through the exact thing. my old school was extremely unreasonable and never understood my situation. sometimes its just as much as them not understanding your situation or sometimes it can be a matter of the school simply not believing you. if they don't believe you its best to either get a parent to tell an authority figure in the school or get a doctors certificate. once I showed them a doctors certificate, they told all my teachers and put me back into all my classes. however, if after all attempts of trying to make them understand, they refuse to do so, maybe it just isn't the right school for you. I hope I could be of any help!

Hi Chelsea,

Firstly, welcome to the forums and good on you for posting here, it's a good first step.

Just wanted to ask, is your school a uni or a tafe, as you mentioned you have to be enrolled in the course. I'm surprised they can almost kick you out if you pay to be in that course.

Secondly, have you been to a GP and had a mental health plan done to possibly look at seeing a psychologist to start working through your depression and anxiety? I suffer from Generalised Anxitey Disorder so I can understand where you are coming from, and it does make you feel isolated and a little like an alien at times but the good news is, with the proper help, you can get better and come out from under this temporary dark cloud, I say temporary, because you can get over this. Have you discussed any of this with a family member or friend as well? having a good support person can always help as well.

Keep your head up Chelsea, I know it can be tough because people's understanding of mental health issues are not great if they have never experienced it so it is always tough but as I said try and find a support person who does understand if you don't have one already and if you haven't seeked help before, please look at seeing your GP, you may even try to find one who has dealing with mental health.

Keep posting back as much as you wish, we are all here to give advice where possible and just give you a chance to be heard and understand where you are coming from as most of us suffer from similar to what you do.

My best for you

Jay

hi Chelsea, you can't help yourself when you are suddenly struck down with any type of depression, because we never know if or when it may happen to us, and there are multiple reasons why this could happen which you are unable to explain why.
This can quite often happen for some unknown reason, and when it does, and you are going to uni or tafe then you will lose interest going to your classes, let alone trying to finish your assignments, then it's pointless trying to struggle on, because you don't have any care and simply don't want to be going, so this is where you need a letter from your doctor or if you are seeing a psychologist stating that you are unable to continue on at the present time, so you want to defer your course.
If they accept this then you will need a letter from the tafe/uni stating this, so if you want to continue on in a year or so, your teacher may have left so the new teacher won't have any idea of what you are saying.
Whether you ask for a reimbursement is up to you. Geoff.
