Wanted: Boyfriend Help.

First time forum.

I have recently been diagnosed with severe depression. I am a final year University student, highly successful in my chosen sport as well as managing my own part-time catering business, part-time job and also a boyfriend of a year and a half.

My boyfriend is the most bright, bubbly, funny and caring guy. One of those gems you find once every blue moon and I adore him. Though with my serious depression he seems to cop a lot which worrys me.

Lately I have been having some very bad days. Crying beyond control, lack of sleep and eating. I can see its worrying him though most days I tend to try and push him away. I constantly worry that he won't love me anymore because of my depression and that its a burden on him. I try and push him away when all he wants to do is help. He doesn't know what to do and neither do I.

I have constant thoughts of wanting to break up with him just so he doesn't have to deal with my depression baggage.

Please help me 😩

I am you but I am 40yr old male, you need to reassure him that you love him and talk to him and try and explain what your feeling.. communication and seeking help is the only way... theres a thousand reasons to leave but you only need 1 to stay... dave

Thankyou. I will try, though somedays its so hard to say whats wrong, its just the feeling.

Hi Fastgirl,

Even when you don't feel like it, talk to your boyfriend. If he is understanding he will be there to listen or even just to hold you if you cry. Try and focus on something positive and maybe something you can do together, even if it is something as simple as going for a walk or going for a coffee. Have you spoken to your GP or maybe there is a counsellor on campus at Uni?? Don't give up hope and just take it a day at a time. If he loves you he will stay. Take care - Indra

Thanks so much for your reply. Means a lot and I will take that on board.

Dear Fastgirl

Welcome to Beyond Blue. It's great that you are concerned about your BF welfare.

The challenge with depression is realizing that it colours our every thought, usually to our detriment. The brain is quite lazy and wants to maintain the status quo. So when you are in a depressed state the brain is happy to keep you there. Sounds really tricky doesn't it?

But we often argue with ourselves over different things. Should I do this or that, go here or there. Should I accept a date with this or that person. In many ways your situation is the same. Should I push my BF away for his own good or should I stay with him because my life will feel so empty without him.

It is easier to stay depressed and this has nothing to do with being lazy. The Black Dog is an artful creature and will no doubt tell you how selfish you are to put your BF through all the turmoil of supporting you at this time.So stay focused on getting well and include your BF in your plans.

How much do you know about depression? Go to the top of the page and click on the tabs. Go to The Facts or Resources then click on Depression under the Facts and For Me and Family and Friends under resources. You will find a whole heap of information. It's always good to be as informed as possible about any illness. BB will send any information you want or you can download it.

Get information for your BF and sit down together and talk about it. Having a starting point is always easier when discussing these things. Tell him how you feel even if you do not know why. There is often no specific reason for your tears or your feelings of hopelessness.

If you have not seen your GP please make an appointment ASAP. Depression rarely goes away by itself. You may or may need medication. That's up to you. It may well be helpful to see a counselor or psychologist. Again this is up to you and your doctor.

I hope you will reply and also talk to your BF about your fears of him leaving you.

Regards

Mary

You are welcome Fastgirl - I still have these feelings at times with my fiancée, but we persevere. It's not always easy, but I love him and I am slowly starting to see that he is here for me. Hugs, Indra
