Started a New Job - Extremely Anxious and Emotional

Hey Guys,

Just wanting so help and reassurance from others who have been through this.

I started a new job and today was my 3rd day. I’ve been super depressed and have random spouts in the day where I just wanna cry my eyes out. The people I work with are great and I don’t think it’s the job itself that’s flaring these emotions but maybe change?

I left my part time contract job of 3 years because this position is permanent and has great benefits. I was sick of my old job but it never made me feel like I’m feeling now.

I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression for about 8 years and have been maintaining it quite well. I haven’t felt this bad in a while.

Could this be caused from change I just wanna run away and back into my comfort zone where I didn’t feel like this.

;(((((((

Hi Chloe,

I think starting a new job can be both exciting but also very scary at the same time. I feel it can definitely be a very big emotional adjustment to the change...

From what you’ve said, the job itself plus your colleagues are great but your emotions are still very unsettled and on edge. I feel for you...I sense your feelings of confusion, sadness and feeling overwhelmed.

8 years is a long time to live with both anxiety and depression. Those must have been some very difficult years...I think it takes a brave person to survive 8 whole years of it. Well done...just getting through those years is an incredible feat in my eyes...

Speaking of anxiety and depression, maybe this recent change has triggered some of your anxiety and depression...do you think maybe you might like to review some of your anxiety/depression maintenance and coping strategies?

Anyway, I think you’ve done great work by reaching out here. You’re always most welcome to write some more (only if you want to). It would be wonderful to hear from you again but there’s no pressure...only if you’re feeling up to it.

Kind and caring thoughts,

Pepper

Hey Chloe,

Firstly, congratulations on the new job!

Any new job or major change can be stressful and can definitely bring about some anxiety and low mood, so it's okay that you're feeling that way, and it is normal for some people.

I totally agree with Pepper, it might be a good time to revisit some coping strategies that you may have learned in the past to manage your anxiety and depression. It's also okay if you need to seek professional help to learn some new strategies too.

Self-care is also very important. Don't be too hard on yourself for feeling anxious about the new job. Emotional release is necessary sometimes too, so it might be time to watch a movie that pulls on the heart strings so you can have a good cry (ITS THERAPEUTIC)!

I'm hoping that as your time there has progressed, it's gotten easier for you!
