Medication

I want to get medication to help me because I'm always feeling angry or depressed but I don't want to go to a doctor. Is there a way around seeing someone?

Hi Anoos,

There really isn't another safe way to introduce medication. Seeing a doctor is vital for both safety and success. The way you're feeling might not be remedied by medication. If you see your doctor or another medical professional, they can suggest lifestyle changes and other factors which may be causing this depression/anger.

Best wishes,

SM

Hi Anoos,

There may be some medications available at a pharmacy or drug-store that don't need a GP's approval but they will not be as strong as a doctor's prescription.

I strongly recommend seeing your GP for further advice and help, as your GP can provide further information about medication and what you can take. Also, a doctor's prescription will also guarantee that your depression and anger will go away as they can prescribe both strong and low key medications.

Hope it turns out well in the end!

Dear Anoos

Hello and welcome to Beyond Blue. Glad you have written in here with your difficulty.

As SM has said, it is dangerous to try medications which are not prescribed by a physician. Apart from the fact that obtaining prescription medication without a prescription is illegal, you need to be monitored to check that the meds are effective and do not cause harmful side effects.

Can I ask why you do not want to visit your GP? If you do not feel comfortable with this GP, go to another. Click on Find a Professional at the bottom of the page. This will take you to a list of GPs who are experienced in dealing with mental health issues. The list is searchable by postcode.

Pharmacy medications may be useful for some types of illness. However, even these are better suggested by your GP. You are self-diagnosing and this is always a worry. Saying you feel depressed does not mean you have a clinical depression. There are all sorts of reasons for being angry and miserable. So please make an appointment with your GP and get checked out properly. Don't wish depression yourself as it is not very nice.

You may not need medication but would find very helpful to talk to a psychologist or counsellor about your anger issues. Maybe not. This is point I am making. Get a proper diagnosis first and don't rely on self-diagnosis or Dr Google. You can do yourself a great deal of harm that way. I hope you will get back to us as we would like to know how you are travelling.

Hi Anoos,

You will need to consult a doctor to obtain the correct medication for your issues. Many of us have a tendency to self-diagnose, however, only a doctor (or psychologist/psychiatrist) would be able to determine whether you are, in fact, experiencing depression.

Psychotropic medications are quite powerful drugs. When someone is prescribed such medications, it is important that your doctor continues to monitor your reactions to the drug. Your doctor will also provide you with important information you will need to know whilst taķing the medication.

I suggest you make an appointment with a GP. Be as open and honest as you can about how you're feeling. There is no need to be embarrassed when talking about how you're feeling mentally; GPs deal with these issues on a daily basis.

It would be helpful if you could see a GP as soon as you can. The sooner you act, the sooner your doctor can assess you and provide you with the help you need. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply.

I just don't feel comfortable talking to someone face to face about the issue but I know I need to. i just wanted to look for a way out of it I guess.

I didn't even want to come online to do this but it was my only option.
