I'm new and scared

hi whoever is reading this,

I'm 17 and yesterday I was diagnosed with depression. I guess I saw it coming. I've lost a lot of friends and I feel like I don't have many people to talk to. And to make matters worse, I'm just about to sit some big exams before I finish school. My doctor suggested I come on here and say something... so I guess that's what I'm doing. I just feel so alone and scared. Are there ways of overcoming this?

Hi,

Well done on coming here to seek support!

That must have been some hard news to hear but shows your strength in being able to carry it.

Why do you think you have lost so many friends?

Good luck on exams! What topics are they?

You are definitely not alone here, we all are here to help!

There are ways to overcome this - here is a link to what BeyondBlue outlines about depression. May be a good read https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/understand-what's-going-on/depression

Hi sunflower13!

Welcome to the forums and thank you for sharing with us.

You're definitely not alone on here and we are always willing to listen. Are you seeing a psychologist? Ask your doctor for a referral, and ask about some medication too. There are also a range of other types of treatments, including art therapy. Try getting your feelings out through writing in a diary, poetry or painting.

Have a read of the information about depression here on the website, there's a fantastic range of facts, treatments and tips to help you cope. If you find yourself in a really dark hole, give the hotline a call.

Remember that negative thoughts are just reactions to fear. Keep us posted, and most of all, keep positive - you won't feel like this forever.

Hi sunflower13,

Welcome to the BB!  Thank you for reaching out to us!

I definately agree on what has already been said so I won't add too much more.  Just want you to know that you're not alone and you won't feel this way forever.  Feel free to jump onto the BeyondBlue young people site: ( https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/  ) for support.  I know for me when I first got diagnosed it helped me to know that I wasn't alone and that there are so many options and resources to help us cope.  Get in touch with a good support system if you haven't already, and know that there is a way out.

Take care. 🙂
