Hello,
For the last year I've been feeling constantly sad and irritable, but I've always blamed my feelings and anxiety on school (tests, exams etc). However in the last two months it has become clear that that is not the case, I have no motivation to do anything and I've lost interest interest in things I use to enjoy. I'm constantly tired and have a lot of trouble managing my anxiety (I've missed school and work because of it). I'm constantly feeling empty and I don't know what to do. I know the obvious answer is to talk to my parents but I have no idea how to open up about how I'm feeling, they will either not take me seriously or over react. I've never had that kind of relationship with them where I feel like I can talk about anything, so any advice on how to do so would be much appreciated.

Hey,
welcome to BB. Glad u have joined us. I understand about not talking to your folks. I was in the exact situation as u r in. I managed to get help in my first year of Uni through the Uni psychologist / counsellor. I'm not sure what grade u r in or if u have just finished but I have a few ideas for u.
1. If u are at school, make an appointment to talk to your school guidance officer or school nurse. If u r too nervous to talk to them, write them a letter and give it to them. They are very experienced at this and they will be understanding.
2. If u r at uni, make an appointment to see the Uni counsellor. They may also have one at TAFE.
3. Ultimately getting to a doctor is the way to go, however i know this can be hard if u r still at home, on your folks medicare card and I don't want them to know. The doctor will be able to discuss medication with you. They will also be able to do a mental health care plan with you, which will give you 10 sessions with a psychologist.
Mental health issues are mostly managed with a combination of medication and psychology.
Have a look for a 'Headspace' office around where u live. They also offer support to young people.
Please keep talking on here. There are some wonderful people here who can offer some great advice. Drop in to the BB Cafe if you want a casual chat and to get to know people.
how long do you have before you return to school? It differs depending on your state. Visit the guidance officer / counsellor / nurse when u get back. I know it's hard to talk about it but you will feel better. If you decide you want your parents to know, they may be able to help you tell them too.
u r not alone! We are all here to help!

Hi Teenidllle,
let me know how you get on. If that doesn't go well, I may have some other ideas. However accessing the resources (guidance officer, nurse) at school will be the easiest for you. Best wishes for it all.
In the meantime, if u can access YouTube, search for mental health videos - Kati Morton is a great one. She discusses a range of topics. It may help you understand what is happening to you more. She also gives you ideas about how to start the conversation with your folks.
