Hate myself.......

I really don’t know where to start but I get down and feel upset about myself ..... in a nut shell, I hate myself!

I feel ugly all the time, I never feel confident and happy but instead insecure! I look in the mirror or at photos and hate what I see, cringing at the sight of myself.

I have no confidence or belief in myself, I doubt myself and everything I do, I feel like people think I’m weird so I barely speak up and come across as shy and avoid social situations. I feel alone, and like no one likes me and fear I will be alone forever and wont met a potential partner as I feel like no one will love me! I am extremely hard on myself with everything I do, I’m never satisfied with myself, terrible at taking compliments and constantly overthinking every situation thinking if I said/did something wrong or if I should have done something differently.

I don’t really know who I am, or where I belong in this world – I’m 19 and have absolutely no idea what career path I would like to follow!

I have had low self-esteem for a long time but feel as though it’s really starting to affect me. I feel selfish for feeling this way, as I know there are others out there with more serious problems then me and I know I have a family who love me – but I just feel down.

I don’t know what is wrong with me? And what I should do?

Hi anon

Lots of GPs these days have a good understanding of these types of issues and will be interested in helping you -or even if they arent quite sure, they will refer you on to someone more qualified.

As smallwolf says, there is a simple questionnaire that a GP often uses to help understand how you are feeling.

Talking about this stuff is difficult for most of us - you could always print out this post and supply to the doctor. Or write a dot-point list of your symptoms and feelings (that will also help you remember things, which can be hard on the spot).

PS Smallwolf - that's a very moving story

Hi Anon,

Self hate deprives us of the love we deserve. At anytime, we are doing what we can, for example: You wrote this post which means you want to change that feeling of not being able to love yourself. To start with, we need to include positive self talk for example: Say out loud "I love myself", there will be immediate thoughts to appose this thought, recognize these opposing thoughts and replace them with positive ones. It is also completely okay to not know your definite career path, just keep doing what you love to do and can, and you will find out.
