Dear Purple Angel
Hello and welcome to Beyond Blue. I hope it helps you to know that many others feel/have felt just like you. Sadly you are not alone but having said that it's good that others can help you.
There are two steps I suggest you take. One is to make an appointment with your GP ASAP. Getting a medical opinion is a vital first step. Depression is a horrible illness to have but you may not be clinically depressed. You be anxious and/or stressed. It's good to understand what is happening so that your GP can offer you the best help in your situation.
The other step is to look around the BB web site and read as much as possible about depression and anxiety. Start with the link on the home page or click on the blue tabs above. Download what you like or ask BB to send hard copies. Being informed is a good step in understanding your illness.
There are other web sites which you may find useful.
- Kids Helpline: www.kidshelpline.com.au They have a 24/7 phone line, 1800 55 1800.
- Headspace: www.headspace.org.au
- Beyond Blue: Obviously you are here. The BB 24/7 phone line is 1300 22 4636. There is also young person's section called The Desk. www.thedesk.org.au
- The Black Dog Institute is a good source of information. www.blackdoginstitute.org.au
Browsing these sites can be very helpful. Also read some of the other posts on BB and join in the conversations. It's fantastic how much support you can give and receive from each other.
I hope you will write in again.
Mary

Hey PurpleAngel333, welcome to the forums and thank you for reaching out to us.
Doctors and psychologists generally diagnose depression in a patient if they have been experiencing 3 or more symptoms for a period of 6 or more months. If it is at the stage that you've been feeling like this for a good while, and it's significantly affecting your wellbeing, definately see your GP for a diagnosis. They will refer you to a specialist, who will help you to pinpoint your depression and negative thoughts, and guide you through your recovery.
