I have bipolar disorder and need help. I don't know how to tell anyone, and am finding it very hard to get through. I am planning to tell my friend whole is comeing over next week, and let her see underneath my mask. If you don't know what bipolar disorder is you may knokw it as manic disorder, Bipolar disorder was formerly called manic depression. It is a form of major affective disorder, or mood disorder, defined by manic or hypomanic episodes (changes from one's normal mood accompanied by high energy states). Bipolar disorder is a serious condition, for instance, mania can cause sleeplessness, sometimes for days, along with hallucinations, psychosis, grandiose delusions, or paranoid rage. In addition, depressive episodes can be more devastating and harder to treat than for people who never have manias or hypomanias.Bipolar disorder was formerly called manic depression. Hi Blue Blood,

Welcome and well done for sharing your story here. 🙂

You definitely know what you are feeling very well, that is really helpful. You are definitely knowledgable to explain it to others including your friends. I am wondering how long you have been diagnosed for? I ask this because I want you to know that there is no rush on telling people. It has to come natural and when it feels right to you.

This friend you want to tell- Is this a good friend? Do you feel supported?

It can be very hard opening up but slow steps work best.

We have been friends for a very long time and she is very trust worthy, one of the most supportive people I know. I have been diagnosed for about 4 and a half months

Have you visualised how you would tell her? She sounds as though she would be very understanding and supportive with this. I understand its hard as it is all still so fresh.

I have visualised how I would tell her, but still struggle to put myself up to doing it.

That is okay, visualising is a great step!

What do you think stops you?

Dear Blue Blood. It takes true courage to let people know you have Bipolar, but can also be empowering. My husband has taken the step after trying to hide it from all family and friends for so long. He's created a facebook support group for people and their loved ones who have Bipolar to chat, share, vent and support one another. It's called Bipolar Support Group Australia. Hope it helps
