Hi, struggling newbie

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, thanks for letting me join. I've been really struggling with alcohol abuse on top of depression and anxiety recently, and not being able to find any solid, reliable employment just exacerbates things. So I really just needed some friendly help getting through it all, I guess. Thanks for being here.

Hi tealover

You have taken the first step by writing in these forums. There are alot of people here who are willing to listen and give some friendly advice.

Do you have a Gp/psychologist you are already going to? Also don't forget Beyond blue has a 24/7 hotline 1300 224 636 to call if you want a friendly voice to hear and talk to.

Good to meet you, Tealover.

Well done for joining the community.

Depression is not an easy condition to live with. Being a depressant, alcohol can only make it worse. Just like in the long term, it makes everything else more difficult too. Kudos to you for acknowledging this issue.

I once self-medicated heavily with substance abuse and though I was never addicted to booze, I did drink too much at some stage. We often have the false belief that it helps us cope with reality. It doesn't. All it does is allow us a temporary escape from it. Addiction messes body, mind and spirit, takes away our freedom of choice and ends up affecting all areas of life negatively. It is also hurtful to those around us. But you know all this, having acknowledged it as a problem yourself. It is a brave first step towards reclaiming control.

There's no need to battle alone as there are orgs to help you get through this (like AA for example).

Learning to manage mental conditions involves all areas of your life. Taking care of yourself must happen on all fronts.

Navigating the forums will help you find the support and encouragement needed by all of us on the road to recovery. Every new community member brings a unique combination of personal experience and responses which contributes to the benefit of the whole.

Welcome on board.

hi Tealover, welcome to the site.
There are people who use alcohol as a way of trying to cope or numb all the struggles which they are ging through, just as I used alcohol to self medicate myself.
If you can't get any employment then this will only exacerbate how you feel and increase your depression, so it's a catch-22 situation, for me I got depression and then started the self medication.
There is a post called 'battling the booze' which has 8 pages of different comments by various people who have struggled with the grog but wanted to stop, but it has different comments on it which may interest you, if you can't find it then type in battling the booze in the top search bar on the right.
If you post your comment it will get much more support that you're after which you deserve. Geoff.
