I am very new to Beyond Blue but not to depression and anxiety. I have reached a point where I am searching for support and answers and a place where I can feel safe and not judged. I have a very long story and I don't feel comfortable sharing as its so humiliating and has resulted in me losing so much - most of all my mental health.

I'm really interested in finding out more about medications and peoples experiences. I have had a terrible experience many years ago where I became suicidal on medication and I was so agitated all I could do was pace and pant and spent hours putting my head under the cold water tap as I felt I was burning.

I have now been advised that I need medication to help me get through as I have been off work for 1 year with anxiety and depression but I just cant do it as I am terrified I will have another horrible experience.

Can I be forced to take medication? Do I have rights to decide what goes into my body? Am I seen to be difficult by refusing? I am not hurting anyone, I am not suicidal just depressed and anxious.

I attend regular Psychologist appointments and have homework from the psychologist and meditation and yoga that I also commit to to help with my symptoms.Unfortunately it is a long slow process and there are times that I go backwards as well.Has anyone on here recovered without medications?

Thank you for accepting me to your Forum.

Hi Dawn123,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for being here. I've been here for a little while and I think you're in good company! It's also totally okay that you're not wanting to share too much and I don't want to ever pressure you into doing so.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience on medication. I've had that too and it's so hard because it's impossible to know how we'll react. Having said that, there are other medications out there - so there is every possibility you could find one that sits well with you. It might be worth chatting to your GP or psychiatrist about your concerns – things like SSRI’s or SNRI’s work differently in the body for instance, so learning why one thing helps and another doesn’t is important.

To answer your questions about medication - generally yes, you have the right to decide and make decisions on your treatment and medication. The only exemption here is from the Mental Health Act, which basically says that if someone is suicidal/at risk and refusing any sort of help they could go into hospital without their consent and potentially given medication. That's obviously the worst-case scenario and it doesn't sound like your suicidal - so I'm just being super transparent so you know what your rights are.

Some people choose to take medication and not go to therapy, others might go to therapy and not take medication, others might do both, or neither. There’s no clear-cut way to get better. I’ve been in all of these boats! It’s up to you what feels right for you – you’re in charge of your treatment and everyone is there to support you. If medication is not something you’re comfortable with, you have every right to say so – or to ask questions.

Sometimes things can feel slow too – I understand that. Perhaps it might be worth chatting to your psychologist to see if there are other things he/she can recommend? There are some free mental health tools and courses online, or perhaps an in-person support group – or even finding your own ways that feel like a good step in the right direction.

I hope this is somewhat helpful! Sorry for the very long post! Wanted to make sure I’d covered everything and given you lots of info. Hope you enjoy being on the forums.

Hey Dawn,

Welcome to beyond blue and it is great to have you here. You will find that many users have been through similar experiences as to what you have been through and I believe you will find these forums beneficial. Everyone here is super loving, caring, helpful and non-judgemental.

Sorry to hear that you have been through a lot and you don't need to apologise to us. Feel free to share as much or as little about your situation as your comfortable with. Don't ever feel pressured to post. Only do so if your comfortable doing so 🙂

Not one glove fits all right? This is the case with medication also 🙂 Medication affects everybody differently. What works for me may not work for you and sorry to hear that you've had poor experiences in the past. It is important that when medication isn't working as it is intended too, you contact your health professional and notify them as there are plenty of other options out there which your professional might consider.

You can not be forced to take medication unless you are placed into involuntary care under the Mental Health Act as romantic mentioned above.

I know you have had bad experiences in the past but new modern medication is really beneficial in most cases so it may be worth considering taking medication again.

All the best and welcome!

Nick.
