Can't think properly

Hi everyone,

Not sure exactly how these forums work, but here goes.

I've had persistent low mood and difficulties with life in general for over 5 years, however I'm now noticing mentally I'm getting slower and slower, struggling to get through the day and come up with any kind of coherent thoughts or ideas that aren't purely negative. I am struggling very much to remember and recall information, and my already poor social ability has gotten even worse, to the point I can't even talk to my best friends or mother without not being sure of what to say (as in i cant think of anything to say). Like my head is literally empty, unless it's to do with me whining about myself. I really don't know what to do, and the only good psych I was seeing is booked out until the end of the year 😕 Has anyone had similar issues and pushed past? Just feels like my brain has been put in a blender or is under the effects of sedatives or something. Would really appreciate any advice.

Hello,

Welcome and thank you for reaching out to us.

I am sorry you have had a bit of a wait for a reply.

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling at present, it sounds like you may be spiraling a bit and need some support from your GP. Are you on any medication to help you with your mental health? (please don't name the medication if you are, that is one of the forum rules).

It is a pity your psych is booked out but there are alternatives in the meantime. Making use of the available helplines will help you get through the harder times and I will list a couple for you to keep in your phone for when you need to talk in real time. They can be very helpful in making suggestions for support in your area and ways to manage your mental health while you are waiting to see your psych. We will be here to support you as well so you don't need to feel alone.

Have you told your friends and family that you are struggling with brain fog at the moment? If not, it would probably be a good idea to let them know so they are not left wondering why you are not as communicative.

I highly suggest making an appointment with your GP to discuss what you are experiencing so they can give you some additional support (that's assuming you haven't already done so).

The warmest of welcomes to you as you face what sounds incredibly challenging in so many ways.

I'm wondering whether a visit to you GP (medical detective) could possibly help you solve the mystery of what's going on. Whether it's something linked to what you're psych is helping you through or what you're facing is a completely separate issue, maybe this is something they could help determine. It couldn't hurt to ask them for a referral for a sleep study while you're there. As a gal who manages sleep apnea, the impact of it not being managed sounds like what you describe. Besides the intense lack of mental and physical energy, poor memory and brain fog can be amongst the side effects. Depression can also be a side effect of certain sleep disorders. Some routine blood tests could also help rule out other physical conditions relating to mentally and physically debilitating imbalances, such as a serious B12 deficiency for example. You shouldn't be left to manage this alone and suffer through it. Someone who can help you manage what your facing becomes your guide through this. While a great GP will look at every possibility, a not so good one will be of little to no help at all. Only ever settle for a great GP because that's what you need and deserve.

While it can't hurt to book in to see the psych you're more than happy with, it's remains important not to simply wait to see them. What I mean is while you're waiting, you can be investigating (with help from others) all the possibilities behind what could be impacting you so intensely. By the time that appointment rolls around, you may have already solved the mystery while having learned so much about yourself and how you tick mentally and physically.

Thank you for responding. I will definitely try a new gp, as I have had health issues (physically) in the past, so there definitely could be something more there.

Hi again,
